Perceived Meaningfulness of Life, Hope and Attitudes Towards Death in Priests

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je provést pojmovou a teoretickou analýzu fenoménů životní smysluplnosti, naděje a postojů ke smrti a na jejím podkladě realizovat výzkum jejich vzájemných souvislostí u souboru římskokatolických kněží v České republice. Dále se práce zaměřuje na srovnání kněží s kontrolním souborem z hlediska hodnot vnímané životní smysluplnosti, naděje a postojů ke smrti. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 50 římskokatolických kněží a kontrolní vzorek se skládal z 54 respondentů bez aktivní účasti na náboženském životě. Vnímaná životní smysluplnost byla měřena dotazníkem ESK, naděje pomocí ADHS a postoje ke smrti metodou DAP-R. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že vnímaná životní smysluplnost, naděje, ani postoje ke smrti s věkem nesouvisí. Vnímaná životní smysluplnost a naděje, kromě vzájemné korelace, souvisí se vstřícným přijetím smrti, vyhýbáním se smrti a strachem ze smrti. Jako jediný signifikantní prediktor strachu ze smrti a vyhýbání se smrti se ukázala vnímaná životní smysluplnost. Dále bylo zjištěno, že soubor kněží se významně odlišuje od kontrolního vzorku v hodnotách všech postojů ke smrti (vstřícné přijetí smrti, únikové přijetí smrti, strach ze smrti, vyhýbání se smrti a neutrální přijetí smrti) a v míře naděje.

Abstract:

This study aims for a conceptual and theoretical analysis of the phenomena of meaningfulness of life, hope, and attitudes towards death, and to conduct research based on this study focused on their mutual connections in the group of Roman Catholic priests in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the research focuses on a comparison of priests with a control sample in terms of values of perceived meaningfulness of life, hope and attitudes towards death. The research sample consisted of 50 Roman Catholic priests and the control sample consisted of 54 respondents with no active participation in religious life. Perceived meaningfulness of life was measured by the ESK questionnaire, hope by ADHS, and attitudes towards death by the DAP-R method. Research results have shown that perceived meaningfulness of life, hope, and attitudes towards death are not related to age. Perceived meaningfulness of life, and hope, in addition to their inter-correlation, is related to approach acceptance, death avoidance, and fear of death. The only significant predictor of fear of death and death avoidance was perceived meaningfulness of life. Furthermore, it was found that the sample of priests differs significantly from the control sample in values of all studied attitudes towards death (approach acceptance, fear of death, escape acceptance, neutral acceptance and death avoidance) and in the level of hope.
