Mass poisoning with methanol in terms of toxicology laboratory

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou hromadné intoxikace metanolem, která Českou republiku zasáhla na podzim roku 2012, a která vešla do povědomí jako tzv. metanolová kauza. Zaměřuje se na zjištění celkového počtu vyšetřených vzorků biologických materiálů a počty intoxikací metanolem v Olomouckém a Zlínském kraji v období od prvního zaznamenaného případu otravy metanolem, tedy od září roku 2012 do března následujícího roku. Práce se věnuje analýze intoxikací z hlediska věku, pohlaví, počtu úmrtí a také porovnání koncentrací metanolu a jeho toxického metabolitu, kyseliny mravenčí. V závěru práce je uvedena kazuistika, která demonstruje charakteristické rysy intoxikace metanolem a poukazuje na důležitost včasného podání antidota. Těžiště bakalářské práce tedy leží v analýze dat získaných na pracovišti Ústavu soudního lékařství a medicínského práva, přičemž dominující je kvantitativní popis metanolové kauzy z hlediska volby vhodných postupů vyšetření, jejich aplikace a interpretace získaných výsledků.

Abstract:

Presented bachelor thesis deals with mass intoxication with methanol which affected Czech Republic in the autumn of 2012 and entered history as a "methanol case". The thesis finds out total number of analyzed samples, a number of intoxications with methanol in the Olomouc and Zlín regions in the period from the first reported case in September 2012 until March of the next year. Thesis analyses intoxications from the aspect of age, sex, death rate and concentrations of methanol and its toxic metabolite formic acid are compared. In conclusion, the case report demonstrating characteristic features of poisoning and crucial role of opportune application of antidote are presented. It may be concluded that focus of the bachelor thesis consists in analysis of data obtained in the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Medical Law, University Hospital Olomouc, when a dominating part is the quantitative description of the "methanol case" in terms of appropriate procedures selection, their application and interpretation of obtained results.
