A Vindication of Joseph Conrad and His Novel "Heart of Darkness"

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on a vindication of Joseph Conrad and his novel "Heart of Darkness", particularly as a reaction to a sharp criticism made by a Nigerian author Chinua Achebe in year 1975. Mentioned will be also the importance of a respect to literature within its historical context, as well as a consideration of literary techniques that significantly influence the way books are being read. The novel Heart of Darkness will be analyzed in terms of language, setting, main character etc. Achebe's arguments will be examined in order to demonstrate the importance of minding all the historical circumstances before making a criticism. The objective of the work is to provide a deeper understanding of the historical background of the authors and the way it shaped their attitude and expression. It will connect this aspect with the criticism made by Chinua Achebe. The aim is also to find an answer for a question, why is Joseph Conrad so often target of critics.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na obhajobu knihy Josepha Conrada "Srdce Temnoty", zejména pak v reakci na ostrou kritiku od nigerijského autora Chinua Achebe z roku 1975. Probrána bude důležitost respektu k literatuře v rámci její historie, stejně tak jako ohled na literární techniky, které znamenitě ovlivňují způsob, jakým jsou knihy čteny. Bude provedena analýza díla "Srdce Temnoty" v rámci jazyka, prostředí, hlavní postavy atd. Práce rozebere kritické argumenty Chinua Acheby, aby demonstrovala, jak je důležité vzít v úvahu všechna historická hlediska literatury před samotnou kritikou. Cílem této práce bude pak poskytnout porozumění historickému kontextu těchto autorů a jaký vliv toto prostředí mělo na jejich postoje a vyjádření. Za cíl si práce také klade najít odpověď na otázku, proč je Joseph Conrad tak častým terčem kritiků.
