Neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease before and after deep brain stimulation

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce jsou neuropsychiatrické projevy u pacientů s Parkinsonovou nemocí, kteří podstoupili invazivní neuromodulační zákrok hlubokou mozkovou stimulaci subtalamického jádra (DBS-STN). Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda existuje signifikantní rozdíl u vybraných neuropsychiatrických symptomů před a rok po DBS-STN. V rámci našeho výzkumu jsme se zaměřili na úroveň míry deprese, úzkosti a apatie. Míru deprese jsme měřili pomoci Beckovy škály deprese (BDI-II), úzkost pomoci dotazníku na měření úzkosti a úzkostnosti (STAI) a apatii pomoci Starksteinovy škály apatie (SAS). Výzkumný soubor čítal 29 pacientů. Získané výsledky ukázaly, že průměrný hrubý skór se po DBS-STN zvýšil u BDI-II, zatímco u STAI se snížil. Oproti tomu výsledky inferenční statistiky vycházející z těchto deskriptivních bodových skórů nám ukázaly, že mezi měřeními před a po DBS-STN neexistují signifikantní rozdíly. Z provedených analýz vyplývá, že DBS-STN je metoda bezpečná pro rozvoj neuropsychiatrických projevů.

Abstract:

The topic of the Diploma thesis is neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease, who underwent an invasive neuromodulation surgery - Deep brain stimulation of subthalamic nucleus (DBS-STN). The aim of the thesis is to determine of existence of significant difference in selected neuropsychiatric symptoms before and a year after DBS-STN. Within our research we focused on levels of depression, anxiety and apathy. The level of depression was measured by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the level of anxiety by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the level of apathy by Starkstein Apathy Scale (SAS). 29 patients participated in the research. The obtained results showed that the mean score increased for the BDI-II after DBS-STN, while it decreased for the STAI. In contrast, the results of inferential statistics based on these descriptive point scores showed us that there are no significant differences between the measurements before and after DBS-STN. From the performed analyses, it follows that DBS-STN is a safe method for the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms.
