Hybridní zony se těší velkému zájmu populačních genetiků, ježto unožňují nahlédnout do evolučních sil formujících populaci kříženců. Hybrid zones are favoured natural laboratories of population genetics because they provide us an insight to evolutionary forces acting on hybrids. There are commonly asked questions impact of hybrid zones on genetic variability and speciation. For these reasons hybrid zones are often the subject of modeling.
