Musical exoticism and orientalism in Saint-Saëns' song cycle Mélodies Persanes

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá hudební analýzou písňového cyklu Mélodies Persanes (Perské melodie) francouzského romantického skladatele Camilla Saint-Saënsa. První kapitola přináší bližší informace o tomto cyklu, zasazuje jej do celkového kontextu Saint-Saënsovy písňové tvorby a dále se zaměřuje na francouzský hudební exoticismus a orientalismus 19. století, jeho prvky a vliv na Saint-Saënsovu tvorbu. Druhá kapitola práce obsahuje hudební a textovou analýzu všech písní cyklu. Hudební analýza mimo jiné demonstruje prvky hudebního exoticismu a orientalismu v písních. Textová analýza přináší kromě překladu všech písní cyklu také detailní pohled na vztah básnického textu a hudebního jazyka tohoto díla. Obě kapitoly této práce mohou sloužit jako podklad pro nastudování a interpretaci tohoto cyklu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyses the song cycle Mélodies Persanes (Persian Melodies) by the French romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The first chapter provides information about this cycle, places it in the overall context of Saint-Saëns' songwriting, and also focuses on 19th century French musical exoticism and Orientalism, its elements and influence on Saint-Saëns' work. The second chapter contains a musical and textual analysis of all the songs in the cycle. The musical analysis demonstrates, among other things, the elements of musical exoticism and orientalism in the songs. The textual analysis provides, in addition to a translation of all the songs of the cycle, a detailed insight into the relationship between the poetic text and the musical language of the work. Both chapters of this work can serve as a basis for the study and interpretation of this cycle.
