Abstract:

Úkolem diplomové práce je identifikace a popis diskursů nepomíjivých těl katolických světců; tzn. současných promluv, které se kolem této tématiky formují. Nepomíjivými těly se obecně míní těla, která po smrti nepodléhají rozkladu a jež si zachovávají živoucí vzhled po dlouhá časová období (tzv. incorruptibles). V práci je nejprve přiblížen historický kontext nepomíjivých těl; posléze je pozornost věnována současnému kontextu mrtvých těl jako takových. Závěrem zde přitom je, že i když v obou kontextech se nepomíjivá svatá těla vymezují ve vztahu k „normalitě“ ostatních mrtvých těl, tradiční kontext je vybavoval určitým statusem „samozřejmosti“, který ovšem v současnosti odpadá, neboť dominantní vidění aplikuje na všechna mrtvá těla normativitu rozkladu. Promluvy jsou analyzovány postupem diskursivní analýzy. Výsledkem je jednak přiblížení způsobu, jakým se nepomíjivá těla definují skrze „normalitu“ mrtvého těla. Za druhé je to pak identifikace tří hlavních diskursů, které se formují okolo tématiky autenticity nepomíjivých těl, tj. přesvědčení, že nepomíjivá těla lze pojímat jako „objektivní“, reálně existující kategorii: (1) diskurs zázraku, který tato těla považuje za plně autentická; (2) diskurs skepse, který je nepovažuje za autentická a (3) diskurs záhady, v jehož rámci mají potenciál autenticity. Obecněji je též ukázáno, že současné vidění mrtvých těl proniká do debat kolem nepomíjivých světců v podobě „vědění o rozkladu“, jehož různé podoby pomáhají autenticitu vyvracet či podpírat, a skrze jádro sporu o autenticitu, tj. „nevysvětlitelnost“ nepomíjivých těl, která je popsána jako element legitimizace vlastní existence v situaci, kdy nepomíjivost již není „potenciální“ vlastností mrtvého těla.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to identify and describe discourses of the incorrupt bodies of Catholic saints; i.e. contemporary utterances that form around this topic. The term incorrupt body, or the Incorruptible, stands for the phenomenon of the bodies that do not decay after death and that remain lifelike for long periods of time. First of all, the historical context of the Incorruptibles is discussed. Then the discussion focuses on contemporary perspectives of the dead body in general. The conclusion is that while in its traditional context the incorrupt body had a status of “commonplace”, in the contemporary context this quality is lost. That is caused by the dominant normative medical definition, which connects the dead body with its decomposition. The utterances are analyzed by the discourse analysis. The findings give detailed information about the specificities of the way the Incorruptibles are defined in an opposition to the “normality” of the dead body. The results of the analysis also indicate an existence of three main discourses forming around the topic of authenticity; i.e. the idea that the incorrupt saintly bodies can be seen as an “objective” category. They are: (1) discourse of miracle, which understands the body to be fully authentic; (2) discourse of scepticism, which sees the incorrupt bodies as not at all authentic, and (3) discourse of mystery, which gives the incorrupt body a potential of authenticity. On general level, contemporary (medical) perspectives of the dead body manifests in the utterance in a form of the “knowledge of decay”. They also manifest in the very core of the authenticity debate, which is “inexplicability”. In the final discussion, the inexplicability is described as a rationale for the existence of the Incorruptibles in a situation, when they are no longer a commonplace.
