“Slavery’s Shadows Fall Even There”: The Experience of a Free Black Woman in the North in Our Nig

Anotace:

Práce se zabývá novelou Our Nig od afroamerické autorky Harriet Wilson. Zejména je v ní sledována zkušenost hlavní hrdinky díla, která žije na americkém Severu a pracuje jako smluvní služebník pro bělošskou rodinu. Autorka srovnává její zkušenost se zkušeností afroamerických žen držených v otroctví na americkém Jihu. Práce tak zkoumá společná témata, která ovlivňovala život afroamerických žen, jako například rasovou diskriminaci a fyzické týrání. Pozornost je soustředěna na společenské normy určující ideál ženskosti, tzv. „true womanhood“, kterému v důsledku svého postavení afroamerické ženy nemohly obstát. Tyto ženy musely také čelit řadě stereotypů, díky kterým bylo jejich ženství chápáno jinak a které ospravedlňovaly jejich zneužívání. V práci je doplněna analýza jednotlivých ženských postav z díla Harriet Wilson a z autobiografického vyprávění Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Harriet Jacobs. Obě autorky odmítly obecně přijímanou ideologii, která kladla na bělošky a černošky rozdílné požadavky, a tím zpochybnily její platnost.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the novel Our Nig by Harriet Wilson. It examines the experience of the novel’s main heroine, who lives in the free North and works for the white family as an indentured servant and whose experience is compared to the life of slave women in the South. The thesis focuses on the issues common to black women, which affected every aspect of their life, such as racism and physical abuse. The attention is paid to the requirements of the true womanhood, which women in the antebellum United States were judged by and which black women could not meet. They had to deal with the stereotypical images, which were designed to justify the exploitation of black women’s bodies. The thesis examines the individual female characters in Our Nig by Harriet Wilson and in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. Both authors denied the received ideology of true womanhood, which applied double standard to white and black women, and thus challenged its validity.
