Aesthetic Dimension of Physiognomic Characterization in the Human Comedy

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat fenomén povahokresby z hlediska fyziognomie lite-rárních postav, konkrétně pak u Honoré de Balzaka, v jeho rozsáhlém románovém cyklu Lidská komedie. Úvodní stať se snaží o ucelené zmapování vývoje fyziognomie jako textové složky v literární historii, od jejího začátku po modernu. Poté práce přikračuje k teoretickým předpokladům a východiskům fyziognomické povahokresby u Balzaka, jak ji u něho dnes rozpoznáváme. Následně je probádána estetická dimenze tohoto jevu, coby jednoho z klíčových míst umělecké hodnoty celé Lidské komedie. Fyziognomický rozměr postav, jak individuální, tak typologický, je na základě tematicky vhodných ukázek analyzován v jednotlivých kapitolách. Práce pokračuje pojednáním o funkci postav a jejich fyziognomie, jakož i o typologických východiskách pro charakterizaci a jejich individuálním upotřebení. Nakonec se v této práci rozvíjí vztah narativu k charakterovým a fyziognomickým změnám a rámec, který pro literární postavy tvoří děj a prostředí.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to explore the phenomenon of physiognomy of literary characters, specifically of those in Honoré de Balzac’s extensive work - the Human Comedy. The introductory part tries to discuss the recent development of the physiognomy as textual elements in literary history, from the beginning to the modern. The paper proceeds by taking steps to theoretical assumptions and backgrounds of the physiognomic mode of characterization in Balzac, as we recognize it in his work today. Subsequently, the aesthetic dimension of this phenomenon is explored as one of the key points of the artistic value of the whole Human Comedy. Physiognomic dimension of the characters, both individual and typological, are based on thematically appropriate samples analyzed in each chapter. The thesis continues with a discussion of the function of literary characters and of their physiognomy, as well as of their typological basis for characterization and their individual use. Finally, the relationship between the narrative and the changes of one’s characteristic physiognomy and also the framework of the plot and the background of the literary characters are developed in the work.
