The Characteristics and Value of J. Otto's Publishing House

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Charakteristika a význam nakladatelství J. Otto“ pojednává o nejvýznamnějším nakladatelském domě zlaté éry české novodobé kultury. Cílem práce je zodpovědět na otázku, jaký význam mělo toto nakladatelství pro českou kulturu. Na začátku práce charakterizuji zlatou éru české novodobé kultury včetně nastínění kulturní a politické situace. Stručně také představuji tzv. trojhvězdí pražských nakladatelských domů. Dále se zabývám samotným nakladatelstvím Jana Otty, na které aplikuji čtyři hlavní kategorie (vznik nakladatelství, osobnost nakladatele, produkce nakladatelství, reklama a propagace nakladatelství), přičemž největší pozornost je věnována produkci nakladatelství, rozdělené na edice, časopisy a ostatní produkci. V závěru práce stanovuji význam nakladatelství J. Otty pro českou kulturu. Z časového hlediska je práce omezena na dobu života Jana Otty, tj. do r. 1916.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis called „The Charecteristics and Value of Jan Otto´s Publishing House“ deals with the most important publishing house of the golden period of the Czech modern culture. The goal of this thesis is to answer the question, what importance the Otto´s publishing house had for the Czech culture. In the beginning I characterize the golden period of the Czech modern culture including the political and cultural situation. Briefly I present so called „the Three Stars of the Prague publishing houses“. Then I only engage the Otto´s publishing house, whereas four main categories are applied (the birth of the publishing house, the personality of the publisher, the production of the publishing house, the advertisement and the publicity of the publishing house). The special focus is dedicated to the production of the publishing house, which is devided into editions, periodicals and the other production. In the end I determine the value of the Otto´s publishing house for the Czech culture. In the time view point, I only engage in the publishing house for the time of Jan Otto´s life, i. e. to 1916.
