Cultural conflicts in business communication between the USA and the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Aktuálně česko-americká spolupráce nabývá mnohem většího významu než kdy jindy, a to v souvislosti s ruskou agresí na Ukrajině a uvalenými sankcemi. Evropští podnikatelé jsou nuceni přeorientovat svoje obchodní aktivity a USA zvyšuje dodávky zemního plynu do EU, což s sebou přináší rozvoj mezinárodních vztahů a nové obchodní příležitosti v zámoří. Je nutné brát v potaz, že úspěšný obchod závisí nejen na konkrétních lidech ale také na znalosti kulturního pozadí neboli kulturních standardů partnera. Z toho důvodu dílčím cílem diplomové práce bylo popsat a porovnat českou a americkou kulturu. Hlavní cíl pak měl odpovědět na otázku, do jaké míry mohou kulturní odlišnosti a jejich neznalost vést ke konfliktům a vzájemnému nepochopení v rámci česko-amerického obchodního jednání. Kvalifikační práce je rozdělena do tří dílčích částí a 11 hlavních kapitol. Úvod do problematiky reprezentuje teoretická část, které obsahuje definice základních pojmů a koncepty zaměřené na kulturní odlišnosti z pohledu jednotlivých sociologů a psychologů. Následující aplikovaná část uvádí teorii do praxe, tzn. vztahuje teorii na vybrané národní kultury. Třetí a zároveň poslední – praktická část se orientuje na empirický výzkum, přičemž závěrem předkládá všeobecná doporučení pro česko-americkou interakci v obchodním a pracovním prostředí.

Abstract:

Recently, Czech-American cooperation is becoming much more important than ever before, because of Russian aggression in Ukraine and the imposed sanctions. European entrepreneurs are forced to reorient their business, and the US increased its gas supply to the EU, which leads to development of international relations and new business opportunities overseas. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account that a successful business depends not only on specific person but also on of the partner's cultural background knowledge. For this reason, the partial goal of the master’s thesis was to describe and compare Czech and American culture. The overall goal was to find out to what extent cultural differences and their ignorance can lead to conflicts and mutual misunderstanding within the Czech-American international business. The master thesis is divided into three parts and 11 main chapters. The introduction to the issue is represented by the theoretical part, which contains definitions of basic terms and cultural differences concepts of well-known sociologists and psychologists. The following part puts the theory into practice i.e., applies the theory to selected national cultures. The third part is the empirical one which is focused on empirical research. In the end identifies potential source of conflicts and presents general recommendations for Czech-American interaction in the business and work environment.
