Evolution of proglacial environment studied by quartz clasts surface features in lacustrine sediments of Lake Anonima on Vega Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the development and environmental processes in the area of Lake Anonima, Vega Island near the Antarctic Peninsula. Several studies have confirmed that climatic conditions in the region changed throughout the Holocene. Lake sedimentary records offer excellent archives, from which these changes can be described in detail besides constructing their chronology. The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the development of the proglacial environment and its changes, with respect to the age-depth model, which was created using appropriate physical and geochemical proxy data by Čejka et al. (2020). The methods applied were based on the study of roundness degree and surface properties of quartz grains and basalts from the sedimentary core of Lake Anonima, the depth of which is 69 cm, while for the purposes of this work, every second cm of this record was studied. The analysis of roundness degree and its surface was performed using a seven-category classification according to Cailleux (1942) modified by Mycielska Dowgiałło and Woronko (1998) with a binocular microscope. Using a scanning electron microscope, the occurrence of microstructures on individual, randomly selected grains in the preserved ratio of roundness categories was studied. In addition, the proportion of quartz grains in the samples was observed and frost action index (FAI) was calculated. The results were statistically processes, visualized and interpreted with respect to the age-depth model. The presence of only three categories (EL, EM/EL, OTHER) of roundness and surface properties was confirmed, especially in the fractions 125–250 μm and 250–500 μm, indicating more intense chemical weathering, mainly in the lower part of the sedimentary record. In the 500–1000 μm fraction, basalts of the EM/EL category were also present in larger quantities. In the lower part of the record, an increased occurrence of quartz grains and lower values of the calculated frost action index (FAI) were visible together with a different occurrence of some specific microstructures, indicating warmer climatic conditions. The results of this thesis confirm the division in the work of Čejka et al. (2020) and match the physical and geochemical proxy data used in the study. Three phases of development were defined, namely 1) the end of the late Holocene climatic optimum with predominant (glaci)fluvial processes, 2) the neoglacial phase with a dominance of periglacial weathering of the material and 3) current warming associated with a more significant influence of fluvial processes and glacier melting.

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá vývojom a environmentálnymi procesmi pôsobiacimi v oblasti jazera Anonima na ostrove Vega u Antarktického polostrova. Niekoľkými štúdiami bolo potvrdené, že klimatické podmienky v regióne sa menili v priebehu holocénu. Jazerné sedimentárne záznamy ponúkajú výborné archívy, kde sa tieto zmeny použitím vhodných metód môžu datovať a časovo zaradiť. Cieľom práce bolo priblížiť vývoj proglaciálneho prostredia a environmentálnych zmien, vzhľadom na časovo-hĺbkový záznam, ktorý bol pomocou fyzikálnych a geochemických proxy dát už vytvorený. Metodika bola založená na štúdiu tvaru a povrchových vlastností kremenných a bazaltových zŕn zo sedimentárneho jadra z jazera Anonima, ktorého hĺbka je 69 cm, pričom na účely tejto práce sa pracovalo s každým druhým cm. Analýza zaoblenia zŕn a ich povrchových vlastností bola prevedená pomocou sedemstupňovej klasifikácie podľa Cailleux (1942) upravenej v práci Mycielska-Dowgiałło a Woronko (1998) s použitím binokulárneho mikroskopu. Pomocou elektrónového skenovacieho mikroskopu bol študovaný výskyt mikroštruktúr na jednotlivých, náhodne vybraných zrnách v zachovanom pomeru kategórií zaoblenia. Okrem povrchovej analýzy bol študovaný aj podiel klastov kremeňa vo vzorkách a vypočítaný mrazový index (FAI). Výsledky boli štatisticky spracované, vizualizované a interpretované vzhľadom k časovo-hĺbkovému modelu. Potvrdila sa prítomnosť troch kategórií typu zaoblenia (EL, EM/EL, INÉ), pričom kategória INÉ prevládala, a to najmä vo frakcií 125–250 μm a 250–500 μm, značiace intenzívnejšie chemické zvetrávanie, hlavne v spodnej časti záznamu. Vo frakcií 500–1000 μm sa vyskytovali vo väčšom množstve aj bazalty kategórie EM/EL. V spodnej časti záznamu bol viditeľný zvýšený výskyt kremenných zŕn a nižšie hodnoty vypočítaného mrazového indexu (FAI) spolu s rozdielnym výskytom niektorých konkrétnych mikroštruktúr, značiace teplejšie klimatické podmienky. Výsledky práce podporujú rozdelenie v práci Čejka a kol. (2020) a zhodujú sa s fyzikálnymi a geochemickými proxy dátami použitých v tejto štúdií. Boli vymedzené tri fázy vývoja a to 1) koniec mladoholocénneho klimatického optima s prevažujúcimi (glaci)fluviálnymi procesmi, 2) neoglaciálna fáza s dominanciou periglaciálneho zvetrávania materiálu a 3) súčasné oteplenie opäť spojené s významnejším vplyvom fluviálnych procesov a topenia ľadovca.
