Influence of the sire and morphological and physiological characteristics of heifers and cows on fetal development

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo vyhodnotit vzájemnou vazbu mezi plemeníkem, velikostí těla matky a velikosti těla potomstva v době porodu. Mezi sledované faktory byly zahrnuty tělesné rozměry matky, porodní hmotnost a tělesné rozměry telete a vybraní plemeníci. Z kombinace sledovaných dat byl vyhodnocen vliv na velikost telete a obtížnost porodů. Sběr dat probíhal v období od 1. září 2016 do 31. srpna 2017 na ŠZP Žabčice Mendelovy univerzity v Brně. Změřeno bylo celkem 436 dojnic, prvotelek a jejich telat. Na základě výsledků bylo možné konstatovat, že plemenice holštýnského skotu dosahují tělesné dospělosti na 3 laktaci, tj, ve věku 5 let. Dále bylo vyhodnoceno, že důležitějším faktorem byl vliv pohlaví na tělesné rozměry telat, kdy standardně býčci byli větší a těžší. Také bylo potvrzeno, že se vzrůstajícím počtem laktací dojnic docházelo i ke zvyšování porodní hmotnosti telat. V práci byly prokázány signifikantní korelační závislosti mezi výškovými rozměry plemenic a velikostí telat v době porodu, kdy vyšším zvířatům se rodila těžší a větší telata. Výrazný vliv byl prokázán při sledování šířkových rozměrů pánve v souvislosti s porodní hmotnost telat. Výsledky práce také potvrdily, že správný výběr plemeníka měl zásadní vliv na velikost a hmotnost potomstva.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to assess the correlation among the sire, the body size of the mother and the birth size of their offspring. The observed factors included the body measurements of the cattle, the birth weight and the body measurements of the calves as well as the selection of the sire. This analysis evaluates the combined impact of these factors on the calf size and the difficulty of parturition. During the period from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017, a comprehensive dataset was compiled by measuring a total of 436 dairy cows, including the first-calf heifers and the calves at the University Agriculture Enterpise in Žabčice holding of Mendel University in Brno. On the basis of the results, it was possible to conclude that the Holstein cattle breeding cows reach a physical maturity at 3 lactations, i.e. at the age of 5 years. It was further evaluated that the sex of the calf is a very important factor, bulls are larger and heavier. It was also confirmed that as the number of lactations of the dairy cows increased, so did the birth weight of their calves. In this thesis, significant correlations were found between the height of the breeding cows and the size of the calves at the time of the parturition, with taller animals giving birth to heavier and larger calves. A significant correlation shew that the pelvic width dimensions were related to the calf 's birth weight. The results of the study also confirmed that the correct stud selection had a major effect on the size and weight of the calves.
