Attachment and Relational Maintenance in Sibling Relationships

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo popsat podobu vztahové údržby v sourozeneckých vztazích a její koreláty a především ověřit, jaký je vztah mezi údržbovým chováním a citovou vazbou, a to v sourozeneckém kontextu. Pozornost byla věnována také vztahu mezi konceptem vztahové údržby a spokojeností v sourozeneckém vztahu. Výzkumu, který měl charakter dotazníkového šetření, se zúčastnilo 324 respondentů ve věku od 20 do 35 let. Byly využity metody Relationship Maintenance Behaviors Scale zjišťující užívané strategie vztahové údržby a Relationship Questionnaire zjišťující styl citové vazby v blízkých vztazích. Výsledky podporují předchozí poznatky o souvislosti údržbového chování se stylem citové vazby, a to v sourozeneckém kontextu. Konkrétně byla prokázána pozitivní souvislost mezi mírou jisté citové vazby a všemi strategiemi vztahové údržby i celkovou mírou údržbového chování. Jistá citová vazba se také ukázala být významným prediktorem vztahové údržby. Byla nalezena také negativní souvislost mezi mírou odmítavého a strachuplného stylu citové vazby a některými strategiemi vztahové údržby. Míra odmítavého stylu se také ukázala být významným prediktorem některých strategií. Byla prokázána také pozitivní souvislost údržbového chování a spokojenosti v sourozeneckém vztahu, přičemž celková míra vztahové údržby i některé strategie se ukázaly být významnými prediktory spokojenosti. Byly ověřeny také rozdíly v celkové míře údržbového chování mezi muži a ženami, vlastními a nevlastními sourozenci a různě fyzicky vzdálenými sourozenci. Tyto rozdíly však nebyly významné. Výsledky byly diskutovány a porovnány s předchozími empirickými zjištěními.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to describe character of relational maintenance in sibling relationships and its correlates and mainly to verify the relationship between maintenance behavior and attachment in the sibling context. Attention was also paid to relationship between the concept of relational maintenance and relational satisfaction. 324 respondents between 20 and 35 years took part in the survey. In the study, there were used Relationship Maintenance Behaviors Scale for finding used strategies of relational maintenance and Relationship Questionnaire for finding attachment style in close relationships. The results support previous findings about the links between maintenance behaviors and the attachment style, in this study in sibling context. Specifically the results showed positive correlation between the secure attachment style and all strategies of relational maintenance, as well as overall maintenance behavior. The secure attachment style also proved to be a significant predictor of relational maintenance. There was also found a negative correlation between a dismissive and fearful attachment style and some of the relational maintenance strategies. The dismissive attachment style also proved to be a significant predictor of certain strategies. The results also showed a positive correlation between maintenance behaviors and satisfaction in the sibling relationships. The overall relational maintenance, as well as some of the strategies proved to be significant predictors of the satisfaction. There were also verified differences in overall maintenance behavior between men and women, full and halfsiblings and differently physically distant siblings. However, these differences were not significant. Results were discussed and compared with previous empirical findings.
