Croatia on the way towards the European Union

Abstract:

Chorvatsko je od roku 2005 kandidátskou zemí na členství v Evropské unii. Jeho cesta k dosažení tohoto statutu však nebyla jednoduchá. Chorvatsko se nejprve muselo vyrovnat s následky války z první poloviny 90. let, a to jak v politické, tak v hospodářské a sociální oblasti. Poté přišlo další zdržení na cestě do Evropy v podobě autoritativního nacionalistického vládnoucího režimu. Ke skutečnému posunu směrem k EU tak v Chorvatsku došlo až po roce 2000. Cílem této historické práce je zmapovat a na základě pramenů analyzovat vzájemné vztahy Chorvatska a EU, jejich nejdůležitější mezníky a specifika a také problematické body, mezi které patří zejména spolupráce s Mezinárodním soudním tribunálem pro bývalou Jugoslávii v Haagu. To vše od prvních kontaktů ještě v 80. letech, přes období jugoslávské krize v první polovině let 90., vztahy nacionalistického režimu prezidenta Tuđmana s EU a rozvoj vzájemných styků po změně režimu v Chorvatsku po roce 2000, až po dosažení statutu kandidáta v roce 2005.

Abstract:

Croatia is a candidate country for the membership to the European Union since 2005. Its way to this status was not easy at all. First of all Croatia had to face up to consequences of the war at the beginning of the 90´s, as well as in political, economical and social sphere. Then came the next delay on the way to Europe – authoritative nationalistic ruling regime. The real progress of Croatia towards the EU came after 2000. This historical work attemps to summarize and to analyze on the base of sources the relations of the Republic Croatia and the EU, its most important turning-points and specifics, and also the obstacles, which means mainly the cooperation with ICTY. That all since the very first contacts during the 80´s, through the period of yugoslav crisis during the first half of the 90´s, relations between the nationalistic regime of president Tuđman and the expansion of the relations after the change of the ruling regime in Croatia in 2000, till reaching the status of candidate in 2005.
