TopoXML - Exchange Format For Topological Data Structures

Abstract:

Internet - současný fenomén v oblasti informačních technologií - je mimo své nepřeberné množství funkcí často i zdrojem inspirace pro nový výzkum. Právě Internet, respektive problematika publikování prostorových dat a jejich využívání v prostředí Internetu, se stala i podnětem pro výzkum, kterému je věnována tato práce. Prostorové objekty jsou tvořeny svou geometrickou složkou, která popisuje umístění a geometrický tvar, sémantickou složkou, která popisuje význam objektu, a topologickou složkou, která popisuje prostorovou vazbu mezi objekty. V praxi se ale pro uložení prostorových dat používají formáty jako shapefile, DGN, které neukládají topologickou informaci, což může mít za následek, že některé typy dotazů není možné vůbec zodpovědět anebo je jejich vyhodnocení výpočetně velmi náročné. Proto chcemeli takové dotazy provádět, je třeba taková data rozšířit o popis topologické složky. To lze provést: - konverzí dat do jiného formátu popisující i topologii - uložením topologické struktury nad daty do databáze - vytvořením vlastního formátu pro popis topologické složky. Tato práce se věnuje návrhu vlastního formátu, který byl nazván TopoXML. TopoXML je jednoduchý, otevřený, rozšiřitelný formát pro popis různých topologických struktur vektorových dat vytvořený na základě standardizovaného formátu XML W3C konsorcia. Schéma formátu TopoXML bylo navrženo v XML Schema. V TopoXML formátu je možné uložit topologické vektorové struktury chain node, planar graph, NAA strukturu, DCEL strukturu, Object-DCEL strukturu, winged edge, quad edge, half edge a PLA strukturu. Na základě navrženého formátu TopoXML byla vytvořena extenze do programu ArcView 3.2, která umožňuje vygenerovat libovolnou topologickou strukturu z výše uvedených a uložit ji ve formátu TopoXML. Prakticky byla data ve formátu TopoXML využita ve webové aplikaci Cyklotrasy, která slouží pro plánování cyklistických tras. Pro vytvoření této aplikace byly primárně využity „open source“ technologie, jako jsou webserver Apache, skriptovací jazyk PHP a UMN Mapserver pro publikování prostorových dat na Internetu. Disertační práce obsahuje čtyři základní kapitoly. První kapitola je věnována pojetí topologie v GIS a především popisu publikovaných topologických struktur vektorových dat. Ve druhé kapitole se zabývám formátem XML, zejména možnostmi jeho využití v GIS, vlastnostmi, strukturou XML dokumentu a popisem jazyka XML Schema pro vytváření schémat XML dokumentů. Ve třetí kapitole se věnuji navrženému formátu TopoXML, přičemž jsem se zaměřil na návrh schématu formátu TopoXML, popis tohoto schématu a uvedení praktických ukázek topologických struktur uložených v tomto formátu. Ve čtvrté kapitole je uveden popis extenze TopoXML pro program ArcView 3.2 a popis webové aplikace Cyklotrasy využívající data ve formátu TopoXML.

Abstract:

Internet – a phenomenon of information technologies is very often a source of inspiration for new research in different disciplines. Internet, especially presentation and usage of spatial data in the web GIS application, was at the beginning of this research. Spatial objects in the GIS have three parts – geometric part consists of information about localization of the object and its shape, semantic part: consisting of data recording the important properties of the object and topological part – consists of data recording information on object connectivity. Unfortunately, a lot of spatial data is stored in a non-topological data format like shapefile or DGN file. These structures are not suitable for queries based on topological relationship between spatial objects. Consequently, data structure has to be extended. There are several possibilities how to extend data structure: - Data conversion into a spatial data structure with topology - Building and storing topology in a RDBMS database - Creating new data format for topology to extend a data structure without topology. This work presents TopoXML. TopoXML is an open, simple data format based on XML format for storing topological data structures. It is designed to store different kinds of topological data structures like chain node, planar graph, NAA structure, DCEL structure, Object-DCEL structure, winged edge, quad edge, half edge and PLA structure. Then a TopoXML extension for ArcView 3.2 for building selecting data structure over shapefile and for exporting this structure into the TopoXML document was developed. Data in the TopoXML format are used in a web based GIS application for cycling routes planning. Open source technologies Apache webserver, PHP and UMN MapServer were used for the creation this GIS application. This work consists of four chapters. Fundamental mathematical theories of topology, papers about GIS research based on these theories and mainly topological data structures are discussed in the first chapter. The second chapter deals with XML, its basic syntax, XML schema and possibilities of using XML in the field of the geomatics. In the third chapter, there is described a design and development of the TopoXML format and examples of different topological data structures saved in the TopoXML format. Last chapter is about design and development of the extension TopoXML for ArcView 3.2 and about development of web GIS application Cyklotrasy which uses topological data stored in the TopoXML format.
