The Influence of Anti-Russian Sanctions by Western European States and the USA on the Economy of the Russian Federation

Abstract:

V diplomové práci je analyzován dopad sankcí ze strany evropských zemí a Spojených států na vývoj zahraničního obchodu a hlavních odvětví ruské ekonomiky. Jsou brány v úvahu historické aspekty uplatňování sankcí, jejich cíle a důvody. Veškerá zpracovaná a zkoumaná data jsou čerpána ze statistického úřadu Ruské federace. Práce se zaměřuje rovněž na problematiku doplnění chybějících pozorování sledovaných časových řad s využitím pokročilých statistických metod. V empirické části práce je provedena strukturální analýza exportu a importu Ruska jako celku, exportu a importu s jednotlivými zeměmi (včetně zemí uskupení BRICS); statistická analýza HDP, inflace a určitých sektorů ekonomiky. Pomocí ABC analýzy jsou zvolené komodity s největším podílem na hlavních ekonomických odvětvích Ruské federace. Dále je popsán jejich vývoj a důvody propadu v určitých letech. Následně je provedena ekonometrická analýza časových řad v období 1995 až 2018 a detekce strukturálních zlomů pro vybrané proměnné. Pro detekci zlomu jsou využívané testy QLR, Chow, CUSUM a CUSUMSQ. V rámci diskuze je shrnut a kvantifikován vliv sankcí na hlavní komodity a sektory ekonomiky Ruska. Pro efektivnější rozvoj ruské ekonomiky v kontextu sankcí je na závěr navržena strategie substituce dovozu pro manažery exportních a importních firem a jsou určeny hlavní směry vývoje exportu.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis analyses the impact of sanctions by European countries and the United States on the development of foreign trade and the main sectors of the Russian economy. The thesis describes the historical aspects of the sanctions application, their objectives and reasons. All processed and examined data are taken from the Statistical Office of the Russian Federation. The thesis deals with the issue of working with missing observations. The empirical part of the work includes structural analysis of exports and imports of Russia as a whole, exports and imports with individual countries (including the BRICS countries); statistical analysis of GDP, inflation and certain sectors of the economy. With the help of ABC analysis, there were selected commodities with the largest share in the main economic sectors of the Russian Federation. Further, the thesis illustrates their development and explains the reasons for the decline in certain years. The re-search proceeds with the econometric analysis of time series in the period from 1995 to 2018 and the detection of structural breaks for selected variables. To detect the break there are used the following tests: QLR, Chow, CUSUM and CUSUMSQ. The discussion summarizes and quantifies the impact of the sanction on the main commodities and sectors of the Russian economy. The end of the thesis introduces a proposal that should improve the development of the Russian economy in the terms of sanctions and orient the managers of the import and export companies. The proposal includes an import substitution strategy and determines the main directions of export development.
