Graded Readers as a Tool to Raise Learners' Interest in Reading

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá použitím zjednodušené četby (klasická díla, která jsou upravena do různých úrovní obtížnosti) jako formy extenzivního čtení ve dvou různých třídách. První skupinou jsou studenti z kurzu Angličtina pro neanglisty v Brně. Druhou skupinu představují žáci literárního kurzu na francouzské střední škole v Quimper. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je prozkoumat implementaci konceptu zjednodušené četby do výuky v daných kurzech a její dopad na postoj studentů ke čtení v angličtině. Analýza výsledků vědeckého výzkumu porovnává výhody extenzivní četby s tradičním intenzivním přístupem k četbě a dále je porovnána s postoji studentů k oběma metodám. Pro detailní vysvětlení pozitivních účinků extenzivní učební metody se práce zabývá různými aspekty motivace studentů ke čtení a jejího vztahu k extenzivní četbě. Diplomová práce také obsahuje příklady z praktického výzkumu po dobu výuky českých a francouzských studentů. Obsahuje analýzu výzkumu zaměřenou na obě skupiny studentů prostřednictvím dotazníku mapujícího názory a pocity studentů ohledně nově implementované metody. Poslední kapitola práce je věnována výsledkům výzkumu a pokouší se předložit důvody k implementaci zjednodušené četby do výuky anglického jazyka s důrazem na zvýšení motivovanosti studentů k četbě. Na základě analýzy výsledků výzkumu autorka zjistila, že pokud jsou úrovně obtížnosti správně zvolené, zjednodušená četba může výrazně pomoci studentům osvojit si pozitivní vztah ke čtení v angličtině.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the use of graded readers, as a form of extensive reading approach in two different classes. The first class is the Practical English for non-English majors course in Brno. The second class to examine is a literature class at French secondary school in Quimper. The main purpose of this study is to examine the inclusion of the concept of graded readers into the ELT classes' curricula and its impact on the learners' attitudes towards reading in English. The theoretical background of the thesis compares the benefits of the extensive reading approach with the traditional intensive reading approach, which is further compared with the learners’ overall attitudes towards these two reading approaches. To explain in more detail why extensive reading approach deserves our attention, the thesis offers insights into various aspects of motivation and its relationship to extensive reading. The thesis also includes examples of practical research carried out during the two teaching experiences with the Czech and French learners. It features an analysis of a survey aimed at the both groups of learners using the questionnaire examining the learners’ opinions and feelings about the newly introduced concept. The final chapter of this thesis is dedicated to research findings and attempts to provide the reasons for including graded readers in the courses’ curricula. The findings suggest that if chosen level of appropriate materials are accurately introduced, graded readers without doubt, will help learners to develop positive attitudes towards reading in English.
