Richness and Poverty of the Orient in the Mirror of Czech-written Travelogues of the Pre-White Mountain Period.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou česky psaných předbělohorských cestopisů se zřetelem na odkazy reflektující bohatství a chudobu Orientu ve smyslu Blízkého východu. Blízký východ zahrnoval místa spjatá se starozákonní historií ale především s životem a smrtí Ježíše Krista. Skvěl se městy jako Jeruzalém, Káhira či Alexandrie a v návštěvnících vyvolával veliká očekávání. V důsledku islámské expanze se obraz Orientu mění, v polovině 15. století pohlcuje Konstantinopol, velkoměsto na Bosporu, jeho pevnou součástí se stávají také dobytá území na evropském kontinentu. Charakteristickým znakem je pro něj především odlišné monoteistické náboženství. Na základě cestopisných svědectví osobností, jež Blízký východ navštívili, je pozornost této práce soustředěna na Orient ve středověké a raně novověké imaginaci, vnímané projevy bohatství a chudoby a islámský systém sociální pomoci.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis of Czech written pre-White Mountain travelogues with regard to references reflecting the wealth and poverty of the Orient in the sense of the Middle East. The Middle East included places connected with Old Testament history, but above all with the life and death of Jesus Christ. Famous for cities like Jerusalem, Cairo or Alexandria, which held great expectations of the visitors. As a result of Islamic expansion, the image of the Orient is changing, in the middle of 15th century Constantinople, the city on the Bosphorus, is absorbed by the conquered territory on the European continent. A distinctive feature is primarily a different monotheistic religion. Based on the travel testimonies of figures who visited the Middle East, this work is focused on the Orient in the medieval and early modern imagination, perceptions of wealth and poverty, and the Islamic system of social assistance.
