The Role of manufacturing in the development of Czech rural regions

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá rolí zpracovatelského průmyslu na venkově, který má významný vliv na zaměstnanost ve venkovských oblastech. Odvětvová struktura je ovlivněna socialistickou minulostí a hlavními vývojovými trajektoriemi je 'path extension'a 'path branching.' Výsledkem uvedených procesů je vysoká specializace na kovodělný průmysl. Vyšší koncentrace podniků zpracovatelského průmyslu byla zjištěna v hustě osídlených obcích, v blízkosti měst a s dostupnou dopravní infrastrukturou. Jako provozovny jsou využívány bývalé areály zemědělských družstev. Retence hodnoty byla zkoumána prostřednictvím dodavatelsko-odběratelských vazeb, přičemž bylo zjištěno, že firmy ve venkovských oblastech mají geograficky rozptýlenou síť dodavatelů a odběratelů. Prokázalo se poměrně slabé zakořenění firem na českém venkově a malá spolupráce mezi firmami. Český venkov byl během pandemie odolnější než metropolitní regiony a krajská města včetně jejich zázemí. V průběhu války vykazovaly nižší odolnost staré průmyslové regiony a regiony s energeticky náročnými výrobními závody. Na základě výsledků byla navržena doporučení pro regionální politiku s opatřeními určenými pro obce nebo malé regiony.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the role of manufacturing in rural areas that has a significant impact on employment in rural areas. The structure of the sector is influenced by the socialist past. The results are path extension and path branching as the main evolutionary trajectories and the metalworking industry is the most dominant sectoral structure. A higher concentration of manufacturing industry was found in densely populated villages, close to cities, and with available transport infrastructure. The former premises of agricultural cooperatives are used as establishments. Value capture was examined through supplier-customer linkages, with firms in rural areas found to have a geographically dispersed network. Firms were found to have relatively weak embeddedness in the Czech rural areas and little cooperation between them. The Czech rural areas were more resilient during the pandemic than metropolitan regions and regional cities, including their hinterland. During the war, old industrial regions and regions with energy-intensive manufacturing plants showed lower resilience. Based on the results, recommendations for regional policy were proposed with measures targeted at municipalities or small regions.
