The Function of Music in Animated Films and Television Programmes

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce popisuje funkci hudební složky v animovaném filmu napříč roky a rozdílnými geografickými kulturami. Práce také prakticky demonstruje tuto funkci a důležitost hudby pomocí krátkého animovaného klipu s rozdílnou hudební stopou. V první části práce široce popisuje roli hudby v animačním odvětví s ohledem na její krátkou historii a soustředí se na její záměry a účinky a vysvětluje, jak byla hudba v animaci používána v minulosti a současnosti. Druhá část se do detailu věnuje konkrétním aspektům funkce hudby v animované tvorbě, popisuje přesné postupy, kterými se skladatel řídí, a úlohy každé ze složek hudby. Součástí přílohy je několik verzí krátké animované sekvence za použití rozdílných postupů tvorby hudby pro ni, na nichž práce prakticky demonstruje důležitost hudební složky a její vliv na celkovou atmosféru díla.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis describes the function of the musical element in animation filmography through the years and different geographical cultures. The thesis practically demonstrates this function and the importance of music using a short animated clip with different soundtrack. In the first section, the thesis broadly describes the role of music in the animation industry and its short history, while concentrating on the intention and effects of it, explaining how music worked in various eras of animation and how it was used. The second section examines the details of concrete aspects of the function of music in animation, describes the exact procedures the composer uses, and the role of each of the elements of music. Included in the annex, there are several versions of a short animated sequence using different methods of making the music for it, on which the thesis practically demonstrates the importance of the musical underscore and its' influence on the overall atmosphere of the creation.
