Sociometric status of an epileptic pupil

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Sociometrická pozice žáka s epilepsií je zaměřena na zkoumání sociometrických vztahů vybraných žáků trpících epilepsií ze základních škol nebo nižšího stupně víceletého gymnázia v Plzeňském a Karlovarském kraji. Práce obsahuje charakteristiku epilepsie jako chronického onemocnění, zmiňuje důležitost bezproblémovosti socializačního procesu v prostředí školy a s tím spojené role učitelů a spolužáků a informuje o modifikaci Morenovy sociometrické metody L-J, která byla využita pro výzkum dané problematiky. Cílem studie bylo analyzovat sociometrickou pozici žáků s epilepsií v několika souvislostech, a to především s úrovní znalostí spolužáků o epilepsii (jedenácti položkový dotazník s uzavřenými otázkami) a mírou stigmatizace dítěte (dotazník STIGMA SCALE OF EPILEPSY), která s touto nemocí úzce souvisí. Celkem se výzkumu zúčastnilo 22 dětí ve věku 9-16 let trpících epilepsií (12 chlapců, 10 dívek), vedle kterých dotazníky vyplnilo rovněž 359 spolužáků z příslušných tříd. Z výsledků šetření se nepotvrdilo, že by dítě s epilepsií mělo horší sociometrickou pozici, než je průměr. Souvislost znalostí žáků o epilepsii a sociometrickou pozicí žáka s epilepsií se nepodařilo prokázat stejně jako záporný vztah mezi mírou stigmatizace související s epilepsií v konkrétním vzorku respondentů. Studie dále prokázala, že vyšší úroveň znalostí snižuje míru stigmatizace epileptického žáka. Dále jsme došli k závěru, že míra stigmatizace ve třídách, které navštěvuje dítě s epilepsií je nižší, než ve třídách, které dítě s epilepsií nenavštěvuje. Uvedené výsledky dávají prvotní představu o dosud prakticky nezkoumaném tématu sociometrické pozice dítěte s epilepsií v prostředí školy a je možné na ně navázat v dalším výzkumu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis, named the Sociometrical Position of An Epileptic Pupil, focuses on examining sociometrical relationships of sample epileptic pupils from primary schools in the Plzeň and Karlovy Vary regions of the Czech Republic. This work contains the characteristics of epilepsy as a chronic disease, points out the importance of a problem-free socializing process in schools and the roles of teachers and schoolmates therein, and also informs about a modification of Moren´s L-J sociometrical method, which was used for this survey. The goal of this study was to analyze the sociometrical position of pupils in several cases, particularly in terms of the classmates´ level of knowledge about epilepsy (via a questionnaire consisting of eleven items with closed questions) and the level of children´ stigma (Stigma scale of epilepsy questionnaire), which is closely related to this disease. A total of 22 children, aged 9-16 and suffering from epilepsy, participated in this survey (12 boys, 10 girls), in addition to 359 of their classmates who filled out the given questionnaires. The results of the survey did not confirm that an epileptic pupil has a worse sociometrical position than an average pupil. The connection between the classmates´ level of knowledge about epilepsy and the sociometrical position of an epileptic pupil, as well as the negative relationship associated with the level of stigma connected to epilepsy in the sample of respondents proved inconclusive. The study demonstrated that the higher the level of knowledge about epilepsy held by classmates led to a lower level of stigma for an epileptic pupil. It also showed that the degree of stigma in classes with an epileptic child is lower than in classes without an epileptic pupil. The given results serve as the first concept thus far about this underexamined topic of the sociometrical position of epileptic children in schools. It is possible to follow up on this study with further research on this area.
