The notion of dimension in literary fiction and modern media

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is aimed at the notion of the term dimension in literature, movies, videogames and other forms of modern media. The aim is to pick passages from these works of art that could correspond with theory appropriate to the topic. The thesis is aimed at confronting these passages with theory and to show the possible usage in applied elementary school teaching. Hence the structure of the thesis. In the first part we are describing the storylines of the works of art chosen for analysis (Flatland, Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland, Futurama, Interstellar and videogames as such). We are describing passages that are relevant to the notion of dimension. In the second part we define the theory needed to explain dimensions for us (Euclidean geometry, Einsteins theories of relativity, parallel projection and the works of Otakar Borůvka concerning the fourth dimension). In the third part we confront these works of art with theory and separately evaluate, which passages are in conflict with the theory and which are not. In the final – fourth part we show several examples of activities and materials created for teaching based on our thesis. A list of pictures, tables and literature is attached at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zameriava na výskyt pojmu rozmeru v literatúre, filmoch, videohrách a iných formách moderných médií. To robí za účelom vyčlenenia pasáží z týchto diel, ktoré by mohli korešpondovať s teóriou k danej téme prislúchajúcou. Práca si kladie za cieľ ukázať ako tieto pasáže konfrontovať s teóriou a ako ich používať pri aplikovanej výuke pre základné školy. Od toho sa odvíja štruktúra práce. V prvej časti popisujeme obsah diel, ktoré sme zvolili pre analýzu (Flatland, Pán Tomkins v ríši divov, Futurama, Interstellar, YouTube a videohry). Popisujeme pasáže diel, ktoré sú relevantné pre výskyt témy rozmer. V druhej časti vymedzujeme teóriu, ktorá by dané aspekty rozmeru mohla vysvetľovať (Euklidovská geometria, Einsteinové teórie relativity, voľné rovnobežné premietanie a diela Otakara Borůvku pojednávajúce o štvrtom rozmere). V tretej časti konfrontujeme tieto diela s teóriou a izolovane hodnotíme, ktoré pasáže sú a ktoré nie sú v rozpore s teóriou. V záverečnej štvrtej časti ukazujeme niekoľko príkladov aktivít a materiálov vytvorených pre výuku na základe našej práce. Na konci práce nájdeme zoznam obrázkov, tabuliek a použitej literatúry.
