The effect of item pagination on responses in surveys

Abstract:

Existují dva základní designové koncepty: umístění všech otázek na jednu dlouhou stránku (scrolling), nebo rozdělit otázky do jednotlivých stránek (paging). Přes realizaci několika výzkumu se ale nepodařilo prokázat žádné výrazné rozdíly mezi oběma přístupy, takže zájem o tuto oblast postupně upadl. Předmětem tohoto výzkumu je otestovat vliv paging a scrolling designu na oblast, které byla v předchozích výzkumech opomíjena – na postojových otázkách. Postojové otázky představují trochu odlišný typ otázek než jsou dotazy na fakta nebo chování, protože zde neexistuje "pravdivá" odpověď a protože postojové otázky jsou více ohroženy vlivem kontextu. Takový kontext představuje i design dotazníku. 66 respondentů mělo za úkol vyplnit dotazník, který obsahoval 10 složitých a ambivalentních otázek zabývající se etickými problémy sociální péče. 35 respondentů dostalo pagingovou formu dotazníku a 31 osob scrollingovou verzi. Výzkum neprokázal rozdíl ve výběru odpovědi na nabízené škále. U paging designu respondenti ke své volbě častěji připojili slovní komentář, ale tento rozdíl nebyl statisticky významný. Podařilo se však prokázat, že vyplnění paging designu věnují respondenti více času. Ačkoli se respondenti při paging designu nad otázkami více zamýšleli, nebyly nalezeny žádné významné rozdíly ve volbě odpovědi.

Abstract:

There are two basic design concepts: placing all the questions on one long page (scrolling), or dividing the questions onto separate pages (paging). After the realization of several researches, there was impossible to prove any considerable differences between these two approaches so the interest in this field gradually dropped down. The subject of this research is to test an area that was ignored in past researches- which are attitude questions. Attitude questions represent a question type slightly different from fact or behaviour questions, because there are no “right” answers, and because the opinion questions are more prone to the influence of the context. Such a context is also a design of the questionnaire. 66 respondents were supposed to fill in the questionnaire which contained 10 complicated ambivalent questions discussing social care ethical problems. 35 respondents were given paging form of the questionnaire and 31 persons were given the scrolling version. The research has not shown any difference in the choice of the answer on the given scale. With the paging design, the respondents added a comment more frequently, but this difference was not statistically significant. However, it was proved that the fulfilling of the paging design takes more time to the respondents. Although the respondents take more time thinking with paging design, there were not found any significant differences in the choice of the answer.
