Woolf’s Orlando: Immortality through Nietzsche’s ‘Overman’

Abstract:

Základem mé diplomové práce je myšlenka, že literární postava Orlanda Virginie Woolfové je nesmrtelná proto, že má vlastnosti, které Friedrich Nietzsche, v jeho knize „Tak pravil Zarathustra,“ připisuje „nadčlověkovi,“ jehož považuje za nový stupeň člověka. Tyto nadčlověčí vlastnosti jsou rozebrány v pěti kapitolách, z nichž první vysvětluje klíčovou myšlenku, že nadčlověk je bůh, a že být nadčlověkem tedy může zajišťovat fyzickou nesmrtelnost, pokud si ji nadčlověk přeje. Další čtyři kapitoly jsou detailními analýzami srovnávajícími Orlandův život a povahu s doporučeními Nietzscheho, jak být nadčlověkem. Základní vlastnosti sdílené Orlandem a Nietzscheho nadčlověkem jsou láska k životu a planetě Zemi, radost ze samoty a spojení s vlastní duší, a schopnost vítat životní změny. Orlando se velmi osobním způsobem přizpůsobuje každé situaci či historickému období tak, že potřebuje o aspektech změny popřemýšlet a vstřebat je, a to nejčastěji meditací pod dubem, nebo se psaním básně „Dub“ spojuje se svou duší, kde hledá odpovědi. Jen tímto způsobem Orlando nachází potěšení a smysl i ve změnách, které by předtím odmítal/a. Samota a bohatství umožňuje Orlandovi harmonický vztah s potřebami jeho/její duše, a dává mu/jí sílu k nepřijetí ideologie společnosti založené na náboženství, která způsobuje smrt. Nietzscheho „Tak pravil Zarathustra“ je pro mě návodem k získání fyzické nesmrtelnosti, a „Orlando“ Woolfové tomuto návodu poskytuje ukázkové příklady ze života nadčlověka. Tato dvě díla interpretují jedno druhé a zároveň se doplňují. Díky postavě Orlanda Nietzscheho nadčlověk ožívá.

Abstract:

In my thesis I focus on Virginia Woolf’s character Orlando and his/her immortality, which in this thesis is understood as a result of Orlando’s qualities that Friedrich Nietzsche in his Thus Spoke Zarathustra ascribes to the new stage of a human - ‘an overman.’ These overmanly qualities are discussed in five chapters, first of which explains the key thought that an overman is also a god and that to be an overman can assure physical immortality if the overman like Orlando wishes so. The four chapters that follow consist of detailed analyses comparing Orlando’s life and character, and Nietzsche’s recommendations of how to be an overman. The basic qualities that Orlando and Nietzsche’s overman share are the love of life and the Earth, enjoying solitude and connection with one’s soul, and the ability to greet changes in life. Orlando assimilates into every situation and historical period in a highly personal way. He/she requires contemplation about aspects of change, usually by meditating under the oak tree or connecting with his/her inner wisdom by writing the poem The Oak Tree. Only then he/she finds pleasure and sense even in the changes that he/she at first denied. Solitude and wealth gives to Orlando a harmonious relationship with his/her soul’s needs, and therefore also strength not to adopt the ideology of the society based on religion, that causes death. I regard Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra as a manual for gaining physical immortality and Virginia Woolf’s Orlando provides it with necessary demonstrative examples from the life of the overman. These two works smoothly interpret and complement each other and thanks to the immortal literary character Orlando, Nietzsche’s overman gains life.
