The financial literacy of high school students

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na problematiku finanční gramotnosti na sekundární úrovni českého vzdělávacího systému, konkrétně na Gymnáziu Dr. Václava Šmejkala v Ústí nad Labem a na Střední průmyslové škole stavební a Střední odborné škole stavební a technické v Ústí nad Labem. Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit míru rozdílnosti ve znalostech finanční gramotnosti u studentů maturitních oborů a studentů učilištních oborů, za účelem navržení opatření, která by vedla ke snížení rozdílů ve znalostech finanční gramotnosti. Prostřednictvím hypotéz jsou také testovány dílčí cíle práce. Vliv úrovně vzdělání rodičů a vliv pracovních zkušeností studentů na úroveň finančních znalostí testovaných studentů. Pro zodpovězení cíle a hypotéz práce bylo využito primárních dat sesbíraných pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Za využití Mann-Whitneyova testu v programu Statistica byly testovány hypotézy. Test jednak potvrdil vliv pracovních zkušeností testovaných studentů na jejich úroveň finanční gramotnosti. Stejný test však také prokázal, že vzdělání rodičů nemá vliv na úroveň finanční gramotnosti testovaných studentů. Obecně bylo zjištěno, že existuje rozdíl ve znalostech mezi studenty učilištní oborů a maturitních oborů. Bylo prokázáno, že o 14 procentních bodů studenti z učilištních oborů mají horší výsledky. Studenti učňovských oborů se neorientovali v problematice inflace a termínovaných vkladů. Z toho důvodu je navržena učilištním oborům řada doporučení. Jedním z nich je klást větší důraz ve výuce na termínované vklady a inflace, nebo také spolupráce s finančními institucemi, které se zaměřují na problematiku bankovních produktů.

Abstract:

Thesis is focusing on the issue of financial literacy on the secondary education of the Czech educational system, namely at the Grammar School Dr. Václav Šmejkal in Ústí nad Labem and the Secondary School of Civil Engineering and Technics in Ústní nad Labem. Goal of this Bachelor's thesis is to find out the difference rate in knowledge of financial literacy between students at graduational studies and students at vocational studies with the aim to suggest measures which would lead to a decrease of differences in knowledge of financial literacy. By hypothesis, also partial goals are being tested. The influence of parents' educational level and the influence of student's work experiences on financial literacy of tested students. For answering the thesis' goals and hypothesis, primary data collected by a questionnaire were used Hypothesis were tested using the Mann-Whitney test in Statistica. The test confirmed the influence of student's work experiences on their level of financial literacy. The same test however also showed that the parents' educational level does not have any influence on financial literacy of the tested students. Generally, it was found out that there exists a difference in knowledge between students at graduation studies and students at vocational studies. It was proved that students at vocational studies have a worse result of about 14 percent. Students at vocational studies did not have knowledge in the issues of inflation and time deposits. For this reason, a number of recommendations are suggested for vocational studies. First of them is to focus more on time deposits and inflation during classes, or also collaboration with financial institutes which are focusing on bank products.
