Television in the families, which do not have one

Abstract:

Práce se pokouší pomocí fenomenologické metodologie, která vychází z konceptů Edmunda Husserla, popsat zkušenost bytí bez televize. Významnou součástí práce je také popis zkušenosti s televizí (jako technologií, objektem i médiem), jak se jeví v myslích těch, kteří televizi nevlastní. Obě zkušenosti jsou pevně provázané a nelze je od sebe oddělit. Výzkum využívá semi-strukturovaných rozhovorů s příslušníky jedenácti rodin, které mají děti a žijí bez televize. Mezi hlavní zjištění patří fakt, že lidé žijící bez televize tuto svoji jinakost v běžné každodennosti nereflektují. Zkušenost bytí bez televize se zvýznamňuje až při konfrontaci se společenskou normou, společnost na lidi žijící bez televize pohlíží jako na deviantní jedince a vyvíjí na ně tlak, aby si televizi pořídili. Klíčovými složkami zkušenosti bytí bez televize jsou pocit svobody či osvobození (od manipulace, televizí podporovaného konzumerismu a neustálého vyjednávání o tom, kdo, kdy a na co se bude dívat) a získaný čas. Zohlednění zkušenosti lidí, kteří žijí bez televize, problematizuje teorii funkcionálních alternativ užívání médií a doplňuje teorie, podle nichž slouží televize v moderní společnosti jako zdroj ontologického bezpečí.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to decsribe the experience of being without a television within the phenomenological methodology, coming out of the concepts of Edmund Husserl. The significant part of the work is also a decsription of the experience with a television (as a technology, an object and a medium), as it appears in the minds of those, who do not have one. Both experience is highly interconnected and cannot be separated. The research uses semi-structured interviews with the members of eleven families, which have children and live without a television. The most important finding is that the people living without a television do not reflect this otherness in their everyday lives. The experience of being without a television is most visible in the confrontation with social norms, when the society looks down on the people living without a television and pushes them to have and own one. The key parts of the experience of being without a television are the feelings of freedom and liberation (from the manipulation, television-backed consumerism and constant negotiations about who, when and what is going to be watched) and acquired time. Considering the experience of people, who live without a television, problematizes the theory of functional alternatives of media using and supplements the theories, which say the television serves as a source of ontological safety in the modern society.
