The role of women in the GDR in the novella ‘Der fremde Freund’ by Christoph Hein

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the role of women in the work Der fremde Freund by Christoph Hein and compares it with the everyday reality of women in socialist Ger-many. The thesis focuses both on the expectations that women of this time were sup-posed to meet and on the way in which they were treated and puts them in confronta-tion with the apparent equality of women in the communist regime. The aim of the thesis is to analyse to what extent the real conditions of women of this time were re-flected in the literary work and how the injustice was perceived by the main heroine Claudia, who is in many ways in contrast to the stereotypical woman of that time.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá rolí žen v díle Der fremde Freund od Christopha Hei-na a porovnává ji s každodenní realitou žen v socialistickém Německu. Práce se za-měřuje jak na očekávání, která měly ženy této doby splňovat, tak na způsob, jakým s nimi bylo zacházeno, a staví je do konfrontace se zdánlivou rovnoprávností žen teh-dejšího režimu. Cílem práce je analyzovat, do jaké míry se skutečné poměry žen této doby odrážely v literárním díle a jak bylo bezpráví vnímáno hlavní hrdinkou Claudií, která je v mnoha ohledech kontrastem stereotypní ženy tehdejší doby.
