The use of value investing methods in a stock market downturn

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce má za cíl identifikaci hodnotových akcií za použití principů Warrena Buffetta a fundamentální analýzy a následnému srovnání hodnotových a růstových akcií s tržním indexem S&P 500 jak v rámci dlouhodobého horizontu, tak i při recesích. Praktická část se zaměřuje na ohodnocení společnosti Microsoft pomocí zmíněné fundamentální analýzy ekonomiky, odvětví a samotné společnosti. Vnitřní hodnotu akcie zkoumá pomocí dividendových diskontních, ziskových a cash-flow modelů. Dále zohledňuje finanční měřítka, na které se při svých akvizicích zaměřuje Warren Buffett jako míru zadluženosti vlastního kapitálu (D/E ratio) nebo rentabilitu celkového investovaného kapitálu (ROIC). Tímto způsobem ohodnocené akcie následně srovnává nejen s tržním indexem ale i s růstovými akciemi v rámci deseti let a při posledních dvou amerických recesích (spojené s koronavirou pandemií v roce 2020 a hypoteční krizí v roce 2007).

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis aims to identify value stocks using Warren Buffett's principles and fundamental analysis and then compare value and growth stocks with the S&P 500 market index over the long term and during recessions. The practical part focuses on the valuation of Microsoft using the aforementioned fundamental analysis of the economy, the industry, and the company itself. It examines the intrinsic value of the stock using dividend discount, earnings, and cash-flow models. It also considers financial measures that Warren Buffett focuses on in his acquisitions, such as the debt-to-equity ratio (D/E ratio) or the return on total invested capital (ROIC). He then compares the stocks valued in this way to a market index and growth stocks over ten years and during the last two US recessions (associated with the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and the United States subprime mortgage crisis in 2007).
