Experience of psychotherapists working with clients with borderline personality disorder

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je prozkoumat prožívání psychoterapeutů při práci s klienty, kteří mají projevy hraniční poruchy osobnosti a také to, jakými způsoby psychoterapeuti s těmito prožitky zacházejí. Teoretický úvod shrnuje relevantní výzkumy na toto téma a jejich závěry. Empirická část se zaměřuje na individuální zkušenost psychoterapeutů z cílové skupiny. Také popisuje metodu a výsledky výzkumu. Vzhledem k výše uvedenému cíli byl použit kvalitativní způsob zkoumání. Data byla získána formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se čtyřmi psychoterapeuty, kteří mají zkušenost s individuální prací s klientem, u něhož se projevuje hraniční porucha osobnosti. Rozhovory byly směřovány k získání detailního popisu specifických událostí a situací s konkrétním klientem (jak psychoterapeut tyto události prožíval a jak zacházel se svým prožíváním). Data byla analyzována pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Výsledky ukazují na křehkost práce s tímto klientem, která se vyznačuje kontinuálním přibližováním a oddalováním a která je pro terapeuty určitým způsobem zraňující a nejistá. Výsledky též popisují specifické charakteristiky klienta a z toho vyplývající prožívání terapeuta. Diskutovány jsou výsledky ve vztahu k minulým výzkumným zjištěním i limity provedeného výzkumu. Práce doplňuje a obohacuje sérii na katedře doposud provedených výzkumů na téma prožívání psychoterapeutů při práci se specifickou klientelou.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the experience and feelings of psychotherapists during their work with clients suffering from the borderline personality disorder, and also, how the psychotherapists further work with these experiences. The theoretical introduction summarizes relevant researches and their con-clusions for this topic. The empiric part mainly concerns the individual experience of psychotherapists out of the target research group. It also describes the methodology and results of research. With respect to the objectives of this thesis, qualitative way of research was applied. Data were gathered using semi-structured interviews with psychotherapists, who are experienced in individual work with clients suffering from the borderline personality disorder. Interviews were intended to acquire a detailed description of specific events and situations concerning a specific client (How the psychotherapist experienced these events and situations and how she/he worked with her/his experiences further). Data were analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results demonstrate certain fragile aspect of work with these clients, the work is characterized mainly by continuous approximation and distancing, while being often psychologically harmful and uncertain for the therapists. The results also describe specific characteristics of a client and the eventuate experience of therapist. New results are discussed in comparison with older research results as well as the limits of current research. This thesis adds to the series of similar research in the Department of Psychology, focusing on experiences of psychotherapists working with specific clients.
