The existential heritage of Austrian Modernism

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá existenciální výpovědí rakouské moderny a jejími proměnami napříč filosofií, psychologií, uměním a literaturou. První část se snaží posoudit situaci rakouské společnosti přelomu století až po několik prvních desetiletí století dvacátého. Zvážení této situace dopomáhá k pochopení komplexnosti existencialistického směru, který se objevuje v literatuře druhé poloviny dvacátého století. Poté provádí práce interpretační analýzu textů Jeana Améryho, Thomase Bernharda a Elfriede Jelinekové. Naší interpretací a literární analýzou se snažíme porozumět a definovat člověka včetně jeho postojů, role a jeho postavení v moderní a postmoderní společnosti. Závěr práce nastiňuje způsoby, jak bychom mohli dále pokračovat ve zkoumání člověka naší doby nejen prostřednictvím literatury, nýbrž i jiných médií.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the existential heritage of Austrian modernism and its transformations through philosophy, psychology, art and literature. The first part tries to analyse the situation of the Austrian society from the Fin de siècle era to the several first decades of the 20th century. Analysing this situation helps us understand the complexity of the existentialist movement which appears in the literature of the second half of the 20th century. The study then performs an interpretative analysis of texts by Jean Améry, Thomas Bernhard and Elfriede Jelinek. By our interpretation and analysis of literature, we try to understand and define the human being and their attitude, role and condition in the modern and postmodern society. In the final part, the thesis outlines ways by which we could continue to examine the man of our epoch through different media, not only literature.
