Consumers' attitudes towards insect consumption in Cambodia

Abstract:

By 2050, the world population is projected to surge to 9.6 billion which will inevitably escalate the demand of food, namely animal based protein. Over 40 percent of world protein intake is animal based protein, their production is extremely inefficient and unsustainable. Livestock farming is highly associated with environmental impacts, the release of greenhouse gases and forest clearance for agricultural activities mainly for animal feeds. Insects was suggested as an alternative due to its richness in nutritional value, more sustainable and environmental friendly when come to productions compared to livestocks. The specific objects were to identify the edible insect’s species that are commonly consumed among Cambodian consumers, the reasons for their consumption, and their perceptions and motivational factors toward insect consumption. Pre-research was conducted to understand what kinds of insects are available on Cambodian markets in the capital city, Phnom Penh. Secondary data was the main source of information to formulate the general understanding of edible insects. Primary data was collection through online questionnaire survey, developed using Google Form and distributed using snowball data collection method.
