Formation of modern subjectivity in Max Weber

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá formovaním modernej subjektivity v kontexte teórie racionality a racionalizácie Maxa Webera. Vychádza predovšetkým zo state Protestantská etika a duch kapitalizmu, kde Weber naznačuje utváranie osobnostného typu, ktorý sa vyznačuje špecificky racionalizovaným, metodickým štýlom života. Takýto osobnostný typ aproximuje k Weberovmu morálnemu ideálu - osobnosti. Etablovanie vedeckého obrazu sveta podľa Webera život moderného človeka značne problematizuje. Moderná veda odkúzluje svet, zbavuje ho iracionálnych síl, čím sa svet stáva vypočítateľnejším. Na druhej strane ho zbavuje zmyslu, ktorý sama z vlastných zdrojov nedokáže generovať. S dekonštrukciou náboženského obrazu sveta zároveň akcelerujú racionalizačné procesy, ktoré sa prejavujú v diferenciácii a vzrastajúcej autonomizácii hodnotových sfér. Nezmieriteľný boj týchto sfér, zásadná Weberova diagnóza modernity, vytvára nutnosť voľby medzi ich kolidujúcimi nárokmi. Weber nehľadá únik z takéhoto racionalizovaného sveta, nechce modernitu de-diferencovať, skôr hľadá spôsob, ako možno v rámci jej podmienok žiť dôstojne a jednať autonómne a slobodne. Jeho etický projekt kulminuje vo vízii heroického subjektu, autonómneho morálneho agenta, ktorý skladá účty o zmysle svojho jednania sám sebe.

Abstract:

The submitted thesis deals with the shaping of the modern self in the context of the theory of rationalism by Max Weber. Weber, first of all, uses the work Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism as a basis for his theory, where he indicates the creation of a personality type which is distinguished by a specific rationalized, methodic life style. This personality type approximates towards the Webers moral ideal – a personality. According to Weber the establishment of a scientific understanding of the world makes the life of a modern person considerably problematic. Modern science demagificates the world, relieves it from irrational powers and thus makes the world more calculable. On the other hand modern science deprives the world of a sense which it is not possible to generate out of own sources. The deconstruction of a religious understanding of the world accelerates processes of rationalization which are expressed in the differentiation and increased autonomization of the various value spheres. The irreconcilable combat of these spheres, Webers fundamental diagnosis of modernity, creates the necessity of choice out of their colliding conditions. Weber does not look for the escape from such a rationalized world, he does not want to de-differentiate modernity. It is more the way how to live under such conditions in a decent way and act autonomously and freely what Weber is aiming at. His ethical project culminates in the vision of a heroic subject, an autonomous moral agent who pays his dues resulting from his acting to himself.
