Thoughts made by Zeros and Ones - Critical Analyse of Issue Could a Machine think?

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá otázkou, zda by mohl stroj myslet. Kolem tohoto tématu se postupně rozvinula rozsáhlá diskuse, která je zde alespoň z části reflektována. Ukazuje se, že filosofické kořeny otázky, zda stroje mohou myslet, sahají až do sedmnáctého a osmnáctého století. Současné diskuse o možnosti strojové inteligence jsou ovšem spojeny zejména s nástupem moderních elektronických počítačů. Právě počítače vybavené "chytrými" programy dokázaly již ve svých počátcích imitovat mnohé lidské kognitivní aktivity. V roce 1950 byla stará a poněkud vágní otázka Mohou stroje myslet? nahrazena tzv. imitační hrou. Jedná se o čistě behaviorální test toho, zda stroje dokáží imitovat lidské řečové chování. Imitační hra v následujících letech vyvolala celou řadu polemik, z nichž některým je zde věnována větší či menší pozornost. Nejčastěji diskutovanou současnou kritikou je myšlenkový experiment Johna Searla s čínským pokojem, který je v práci rovněž podrobněji analyzován. Na závěr se pokouším zodpovědět otázku, zda by mohl stroj myslet.

Abstract:

This study considers the question whether a machine could think. There are a huge number of discussions on this topic. I summarize the most important of them. I show that the issue of machine intelligence is not new to philosophy. The debate about whether a machine might think has its philosophical roots in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. But the contemporary debate about the possibility of machine intelligence ignited with the advent of modern electronic computers. Computers with clever programs performed a variety of ostensibly cognitive activities. By the early 1950?s the old and vague question Could a machine think? had been replaced in terms of "the Imitation game". Imitation game has been proposed as a purely behavioral test of whether a computer might be carrying on an activity at least comparable to human thinking. In the next years a number of objections to the Imitation game and to the concepts of artificial intelligence have been advanced. The most popular contemporary objection against machine intelligence developed John Searle. Searle?s argument is based on a thought experiment named The Chinese Room. At the end of this study I try to answer the question Could a machine think?
