The Language of the World of Warcraft Community

Abstract:

This thesis is chiefly concerned with the analysis of synchronous text-based communication of the players of World of Warcraft. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part focuses on the introduction of selected aspects of discourse, characteristics of spoken and written language, word-formation processes, and a brief description of the game itself. The main focus of the practical part is the analysis of selected communications between players in different areas of the game and the comparison of these in order to observe, how context affects the communication. This part also includes a glossary of slang words, used by the community, divided by the word-formation processes, used to form these words.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou synchronní textové komunikace hráčů ve hře World of Warcraft. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část práce je zaměřena na popis vybraných aspektů diskurzu, charakteristik psaného a mluveného projevu, slovotvorných procesů a obsahuje také stručný popis hry World of Warcraft. Praktická část je zaměřena především na analýzu vybraných komunikací z různých prostředí hry a zkoumá, jaký má kontext vliv na textovou komunikaci ve hře. Dále obsahuje krátký glosář slangových výrazů, používaných hráči této hry, rozdělených dle slovotvorných procesů, kterými byly jednotlivé pojmy vytvořeny.
