Abstract:

The aim of my work was a translation and an analysis of a prologue of a book on travel Notes From a Small Islands by Bill Bryson. In my thesis I had to deal with problems that have arisen by reason of the different language and culture reality of Czech and English nation, as well as American, as the author is an American native speaker. I attempted to compare them to the theoretical views of the Czech language theorists Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Milan Hrdlička. At the same time my stylistic intention was to find and preserve Brysons style of writing and catch the witty plots that the text was filled with.
