Stream of Consciousness in Czech and Slovak Translations

Abstract:

James Joyce, významný představitel literárního modernismu, se proslavil svým experimentálním přístupem k formě literárního díla. Napříč kapitolami svého nejslavnějšího románu Odysseus využívá značné spektrum literárních stylů, jimiž staví události obyčejného dne z 20. století do kontrastu s antickým hrdinským eposem. Nadto Joyce vyvinul několik jazykových prostředků, díky kterým byl schopen přesvědčivě zachytit mentální procesy tří hlavních románových postav. Soubor těchto jazykových prostředků vešel ve známost pod jménem proud vědomí. Cílem této magisterské práce je porovnat český a slovenský překlad pasáží proudu vědomí z vybraných kapitol Odyssea, konkrétně z kapitol Télemachos, Nestór, Próteus, Kalypsó, Lotofágové a Pénelopé. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, jestli překlad záměrně nekoherentního, nejednoznačného a gramaticky nesprávného textu věrně vystihnul svébytnost originálu, nebo jestli došlo ke zlogičťování textu, které je podle Levého (1963) přirozenou tendencí překladatele. Práce má za cíl také identifikovat jazykové prostředky, které překladatelé použili ve snaze reprodukovat Joycův výjimečný styl, a zjistit, jestli byl slovenský překlad Jozefa Kota (1993) ovlivněn dřívějším českým překladem Aloyse Skoumala (1976).

Abstract:

James Joyce, critically acclaimed modernist author, earned his fame by experimenting with the formal aspects of writing. Apart from writing every chapter of his famous novel Ulysses in a different style and juxtaposing an ordinary story from the 20th century with the heroic epos from the ancient times, he developed a set of linguistic techniques to convincingly convey the mental processes of his three main characters. This set of techniques is commonly referred to as the stream of consciousness. The thesis aims to compare the Czech and the Slovak translation of stream-of-consciousness passages from selected chapters, namely Telemachus, Nestor, Proteus, Calypso, Lotus Eaters, and Penelope. Since stream of consciousness techniques produce text that is intentionally incoherent, ambiguous and grammatically incorrect, the main objective of the thesis is to find out whether the translations retained these qualities or whether there is evidence of logicalisation of the text, which is, according to Levý (1963), a tendency to which translators naturally incline to. The thesis also aims to identify the linguistic features used by the translators to reproduce Joyce’s unique style, and to determine whether the Slovak translation by Jozef Kot (1993) was influenced by the earlier Czech translation by Aloys Skoumal (1976).
