Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na úlohu a význam témat ctností a neřestí v Chaucerových Canterburských povídkách, jmenovitě v „Povídce ženy z Bath,“ „Povídce rytířově“ a „Povídce mlynářově.“ Cílem této práce je dokázat, že se téma ctností a neřestí často v povídkách objevuje a že zde hraje svou specifickou roli. Nejprve je představen samotný koncept a původ ctností a neřestí. Pozornost je věnována rozdělení sedmi ctností na základní a teologické, ale i vysvětlení sedmi smrtelných hříchů. Hlavní část bakalářské práce začíná rozborem „Povídky ženy z Bath.“ Je zde popisována žena z Bath jako vypravěč povídky, její poněkud neřestná povaha, ale také pojetí ctností a neřestí v příběhu, který vypráví. „Povídka rytířova“ je oslavou rytířských ctnosti a na rozdíl od „Povídky ženy z Bath“ a „Povídky mlynářovy,“ které jsou zaměřené především na zábavu, je jednou z povídek zabývajících se morálními zásadami lidí a především rytířů. V této části práce je představen urozený rytíř a jeho příběh vyzdvihující rytířskost, ušlechtilost a ctnosti, přesto jsou jeho postavy sváděny i k hříchu. Poslední část práce je věnována postavě mlynáře a jeho vyprávění. „Povídka mlynářova“ je tzv. fabliau a jejím hlavním účelem je pobavit čtenáře, což je zároveň důvodem, proč se v ní objevuje větší množství neřestí než například v „Povídce rytířově.“ Tato část práce zkoumá nejen ctnosti a neřesti samotného mlynáře a jeho příběhu, ale zaměřuje se také na trest za hříchy, který přichází na konci povídky.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the role and importance of the virtues and vices as themes in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales particularly in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale”, “The Knight’s Tale” and “The Miller’s Tale.” The aim is to prove that the virtues and vices frequently appear in the tales and have their specific role in Chaucer’s work. The paper begins with the presentation of the actual concept and origin of virtues and vices. The attention is paid to the division of the Seven Heavenly Virtues into Cardinal Virtues and Theological Virtues and the paper also examines the Seven Deadly Sins. The main part of the thesis begins with the analysis of “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.” It focuses on the Wife as the narrator, studies her rather vice-prone character and also deals with the portrayal of the virtues and vices in the story narrated by the Wife. The virtues which should be possessed by knights are glorified in “The Knight’s Tale.” Unlike “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” and “The Miller’s Tale” which are written mainly to entertain the reader and should not be taken very seriously, “The Knight’s Tale” is one of the stories which describe the moral principles of people and especially of knights. In this passage of the paper I present the noble character of the Knight and his story which is mainly concerned with chivalry and virtues but the characters are sometimes prone to be sinful as well. The final part of the thesis is devoted to the character of the Miller and his tale. The genre of the of “The Miller’s Tale” is known as fabliau, its main purpose is to amuse the audience and that is also the reason why “The Miller’s Tale” unlike for example “The Knight’s Tale” is filled with vices. The work again explores both the virtues and vices of the Miller and of his tale, and it also pays attention to the punishment for being sinful which comes at the end of the story.
