Female gaze vs male gaze in contemporary Hollywood

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the opposing concepts of feminist film criticism, the Male Gaze and the Female Gaze, which examine the portrayal of women in films. The analytical part of this thesis aims to identify and compare these concepts in contemporary Hollywood films, Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and Barbie (2023). The results of this analysis indicate a gradual improvement in the portrayal of women in terms of their authenticity, independence, and liberation from objectification.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na protichůdné koncepty feministické filmové kritiky, Male Gaze a Female Gaze, které se zaměřují na vyobrazování žen ve filmech. Analytická část této práce se zaměřuje na identifikaci a porovnávání těchto konceptů v současných hollywoodských snímcích Sebevražedný oddíl (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), a Barbie (2023). Výsledek této analýzy naznačuje postupné zlepšení vyobrazování žen z hlediska jejich autentičnosti, nezávislosti a odproštění od objektivizace.
