The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Gothic Horror

Abstract:

Cílem práce je sledovat vznik, vývoj, společenský odraz a šíření gotického horroru jakožto extrémní formy romantismu. Autorka se nejprve zaměří na analýzu příčin vzniku uměleckého žánru a jeho ranných děl. Dále zanalyzuje nárust popularity gotického horroru v první polovině devatenáctého století a bude sledovat jeho další rozvoj. Následně se zaměří na příčiny jeho úpadku a následného "vzkříšení". Práce se bude zabývat nejen jednotlivými autory a jejich díly, ale svou obzvláštní pozornost zaměří na vliv gotického horroru na romantismus a společnost 19. století. Práce tak představí gotický horror nejen jako literární, ale i společenský fenomén, který výrazně přispěl k rozvoji evropských kulturních dějin. V závěru studentka zhodnotí vliv tohoto žánru na dějiny moderního umění ve druhé polovině 20. století a porovná změny, jenž v této době zaznamenala.

Abstract:

The aim is to follow the origin, development, social reflections and spread of gothic horror as an extreme form of romanticism. First, the author will focus on analysing the causes of the origin of the genre and its early works. She will also analyse the rise in popularity of gothic horror in the first half of the nineteenth century and will follow its further development. Subsequently, she will focus on the causes of its decline and "resurrection". The work will not only deal with individual authors and their works, but the author will also pay special attention to the influence of gothic horror on romanticism and the nineteenth century society, so the work will present gothic horror not only as a literary but also a social phenomenon which significantly contributed to the development of European cultural history. At the end the student will evaluate the influence of this genre on the history of modern art in the second half of the twentieth century and compare changes that she registered.
