The Relationship Between Mind Sets and the Motivation of Secondary School Students of English as a Second Language

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vztah mezi mentalitou a motivací u studentů, kteří se učí angličtinu jako cizí jazyk. Práce se soustředí na zjištění, jaká mentalita převažuje ve zkoumané skupině studentů střední odborné školy a učiliště, při kterých volnočasových aktivitách anglický jazyk využívají a na nalezení vztahu mezi mentalitou a těmito aktivitami. Kvalitativní průzkum malého rozsahu (kombinace dotazníku, sebereflexe studentů, a částečně strukturovaného rozhovoru s vyučující angličtiny) ukázal, že ve skupině převládá růstové nastavení mysli. Dále se ukázalo, že je možné rozčlenit volnočasové aktivity, při kterých studenti využívají angličtinu, do čtyř skupin: hraní počítačových her, sledování filmů, poslech hudby a internetová komunikace na sociálních sítích. Výzkum neprokázal spojitost mezi mentalitou studentů a množstvím ani typem volnočasových aktivit.

Abstract:

The thesis investigates the relationship between mind sets and motivation of students of English as a second language. Specifically, it seeks to identify the predominant mind set of a group of students at a vocational and training school (VaTS) and what extracurricular activities connected to the English language these students participate in, and to find out if there is any correlation between the growth or fixed mind set and their activities involving the English language. A small-scale study, which combined a questionnaire with a narrative, and a semi-structured interview with students’ teacher has shown that the predominant mind set in the target group is the fixed mind set, and identified four main types of extracurricular activities students engage in which employ English: playing computer games, watching films, listening to music, and online communication. No correlation between the mind sets of the students and activities employing English has been found.
