Queer Spaces: Bedrooms in Giovanni´s Room and Another Country by Baldwin and film Passing

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on what is a queer space and how can a space be queer(ed) in James Baldwin's Another Country (1962) and Giovanni's Room (1956), and a film version of Nella Larsen's novella Passing (2021). Aspects that make the bedrooms queer spaces are identified and analyzed vis-?-vis the physical state, heteronormative expectations of the 20th-century American society, and acts of the main characters of the stories and film, namely David and Giovanni from Giovanni's Room, Vivaldo, Rufus and Eric from Another Country, and Irene with Clare from Passing (2021). The aim of this thesis is to show how Baldwin and Larsen question, transform and undermine heteronormativity. The result of such treatment of heteronormative bedrooms is the creation of queer spaces, i.e. queer bedrooms. The reason for focusing on the bedroom is primarily because the bedroom should function as a place of intimacy, trust, and physical connection for heterosexual couples in the three works. However, in Giovanni's Room, Another Country, and Passing, the heterosexual couples do not express their feelings for each other in the bedrooms.

Práce se zaměřuje na to, co je to queer prostor a jak se prostor může na queer změnit v dílech Jamese Baldwina Jiná země (1962) a Giovanniho pokoj (1956) a filmové verzi novely od Nelly Larsenové, Passing (2021). Tato diplomová práce identifikuje a analyzuje aspekty, které ložnice přeměňují na queer prostory, a to ve vztahu k mentálnímu stavu, heteronormativním očekáváním americké společnosti 20. století a chování hlavních postav příběhů a filmu, jmenovitě Davida a Giovanniho z Giovanniho pokoje, Vivalda, Rufuse a Erica z Jiné země a Irene s Clare z filmu Přebíhání (2021). Práce ukazuje, jak Baldwin a Larsenová, potažmo režisérka Rebecca Hallová, heteronormativitu zpochybňují, přeměňují a podrývají. Výsledkem takového zacházení s heteronormativními ložnicemi je pak vytvoření queer prostoru, tedy queer ložnic. Důvodem zaměření se na ložnice je především fakt, že ložnice by měla pro heterosexuální páry těchto děl fungovat jako místo intimity, důvěry a fyzického spojení. V Giovanniho pokoji, Jiné zemi a Přebíhání se toto však neděje.
