Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tradicí two-spirit lidí – amerických Indiánů, kteří neměli identitu ani mužů, ani žen, ale tvořili oddělenou genderovou kategorii. Účelem práce je výzkum různých způsobů, jakými two-spiriti fungovali jako mediátoři, a poukázání na to, jak byl světonázor amerických Indiánů, na rozdíl od binárního euroamerického světonázoru, otevřenější nejednoznačnostem, což umožnilo existenci této velmi liminální role. První kapitola definuje pojem two-spirit a objasňuje terminologii i proměnu chápání této role v čase. Hlavní část práce pomocí syntézy různých zdrojů objasňuje, jak two-spiriti fungovali jako mediátoři mezi odlišnými kategoriemi, zejména mezi gendery, kulturami, životem a smrtí a profánním a posvátným světem. Předloženy jsou rozličné příklady jak ze života jednotlivých indiánských kultur, tak z jejich mytologie. Závěrečná část se zabývá tím, jak, na rozdíl od euroamerického světonázoru zdůrazňujícího jasně rozdělené kategorie často sestávající z binárních opozic, světonázor Indiánů je mnohem otevřenějším myšlenkám harmonie, propojenosti a rovnováhy, což vytváří místo pro méně jednoznačné kategorie. Práce ukazuje, že two-spiriti byli v některých kmenech považovaní za obdařené jedinečnými dovednostmi či talentem k vykonávání rolí mediátorů a že neměli tyto role navzdory své nebinární genderové identitě, ale díky ní. Na rozdíl od euroamerické společnosti umožnili Indiáni nejenom existenci lidí, kteří se neidentifikovali ani jako muži, ani jako ženy, ale někde je přijímali a umožnili jim využít jejich jedinečné pozice k prospěchu celé společnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's diploma thesis discusses the tradition of two-spirit people – Native Americans who identified as neither men nor women but formed a distinct gender category. The purpose of the thesis is to examine various ways in which two-spirit people worked as mediators and to show how the Native American worldview, as opposed to the binary Euro-American worldview, was more accepting of ambiguity, which allowed the existence of this very liminal role. The first chapter of the thesis defines the term two-spirit, clarifies the terminology, and shows how the understanding of this role changed with time. The main body of the thesis is based on a synthesis of various sources and focuses on roles of two-spirits as mediators between different categories, in particular between genders, cultures, life and death, and the profane and the sacred worlds. Various examples of this role are provided from the lives of Native Americans well as from their mythology. The final chapter deals with the fact that unlike the Euro-American worldview, which emphasizes clearly divided categories which commonly consist of binary oppositions, the Native American worldview is more open to the ideas of harmony, interconnectedness and balance, as a result, creating space for more ambiguous categories. The thesis shows that two-spirit people were in some tribes considered to have unique skills or talents for the performance of the roles of mediators and that they did not have these roles in spite of their non-binary gender identity, but rather because of it. Unlike the Euro-American society, Native Americans not only allowed the existence of people who identified neither as men nor as women, but some accepted them and were able to used their unique position to the advantage of the whole society.
