Diplomová práce se zabývá účelem trestání. Účel trestání patří mezi nejdůležitější etické otázky moderní společnosti. Nejprve je přiblížen problém ospravedlnění trestu, následovaný postupným vytvořením jeho definice a popisem funkcí trestání.
