Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá prvním historickým románem psaným v anglickém jazyce – Waverley aneb Před šedesáti lety od Waltera Scotta jehož děj se odehrává ve velmi bouřlivém období skotských dějin - v době jakobitského povstání v roce 1745. Hlavním cílem této práce je uvést historický kontext románu a následná literární analýza díla. Práce důkladně zkoumá historické pozadí románu a vymezuje klíčové momenty Scottova života. Následuje podrobná analýza díla, která mimo jiné zkoumá, jak Scottovo dílo ovlivnilo skotskou národní identitu. Tato práce se také zabývá historicitou vybraných míst a postav z románu a následně zkoumá symboliku a vývoj vybraných postav.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the first historical novel written in the English language - Waverley: or, ’Tis Sixty Years Since by Sir Walter Scott which is set in a very turbulent period of Scottish history - the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and the primary aim of this thesis is to give a historical context for the novel and to analyze Scott’s magnum opus. The thesis thoroughly examines the historical background and defines key moments of Sir Walter Scott’s life. Then the thesis focuses on the close reading and literary analysis of the novel which among else explores how Scott’s work influenced Scottish national identity. Moreover, the thesis also deals with the historicity of chosen locations and characters from the novel and then examines the symbolism of selected characters.
