Quality of life in seniors with age-related macular degeneration

Abstract:

Cíl: Hlavním cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit kvalitu života u seniorů s věkem podmíněnou makulární degenerací. Záměrem bylo zjistit, jak tito senioři hodnotí kvalitu života a také klíčové oblasti v rámci jejich zraku. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 135 respondenty, kteří navštívili vybranou oční ambulanci, kvůli aplikaci léčebné látky do postiženého oka v období od 1. března do 30. září 2023. K získání potřebných dat byl použit standardizovaný dotazník Visual Function Questionnaire 25, který byl hodnocen podle manuálu určeného k danému dotazníku a který byl doplněn o otázky vlastní konstrukce. Výsledky: Na základě získaných výsledků tohoto výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že vyšší kvalitu života pociťují respondenti v kategoriích řízení motorových vozidel, bolest očí, periferní vidění a barevné vidění. Naopak nejnižší kvalita života byla zjištěna v kategoriích celkové vidění a celkové zdraví. Z výsledků dále vyplývá, že není rozdíl ve vnímání kvality života na základě podané léčebné látky. Dále byl zjištěn rozdíl ve vnímání kvality života na základě pohlaví, věku a délce léčby. Taktéž byla zjištěna souvislost mezi viděním do blízka a dálky u seniorů s věkem podmíněnou makulární degenerací. Jako poslední se zjišťoval rozdíl v subjektivním hodnocení duševního zdraví u seniorů dle pohlaví. Zde byla zjištěna významná závislost pouze u jedné otázky, která se zaměřovala na zjištění, zda mají respondenti méně kontroly nad tím, co dělají. Závěr: Věkem podmíněná makulární degenerace výrazně ovlivňuje kvalitu života u seniorů. Je proto velice důležité, aby byla právě u těchto seniorů pravidelně monitorována kvalita života, díky níž by mohlo dojít ke zkvalitnění péče o seniora, k jeho větší spokojenosti s péči a také k lepšímu zjištění problémových kategorií při vyhodnocování dotazníku Visual Function Questionnaire 25. Je proto vhodné, aby vzniklo více českých studií, které by se zaměřily právě na téma spojené s kvalitou života u seniorů s věkem podmíněnou makulární degenerací.

Abstract:

Aim: The main aim of the diploma thesis was to determine the quality of life in seniors with age-related macular degeneration. The intension was to find out how these seniors evaluate the quality of life and the key areas within their vision. Methodology: The research group consisted of 135 respondents who visited a selected eye clinic for the application of a medicinal substance to the affected eye in the period from the 1. of March until 30. of September 2023. To obtain the necessary data, a standardized Visual Function Questionnaire 25 was used, which was evaluated according to manual intended for the given questionnaire and which was supplemented with questions of its own design. Results: Based on the obtained results of this research, it was found that the respondents felt a higher quality of life in the categories of driving motor vehicles, eye pain, peripheral vision and color vision. On the contrary, the lowest quality of life was found in the categories of general vision and general health. The results also show that there is no difference in the perception of the quality of life based on the administered medicinal substance. Furthermore, a difference in the perception of quality of life based on gender, age and duration of treatment was found. A connection between near and far vision was also found in seniors with age-related macular degeneration. Lastly, the difference in the subjective assessment of mental health among seniors according to gender was determined. Here, a significant dependence was found only for one question, which aimed to find out if respondents had less control over what they were doing. Conslusion: Age-related macular degeneration significantly affects the quality of life in the elderly. It is therefore very important that the quality of life of these seniors is regularly monitored, thanks to which the quality of care for the could be improved, his satisfaction with care and, also for a better identification of problem categories when evaluation the Visual Function Questionnaire 25. It is therefore suitable for the Czech studies to be created that would focus on the topic related to the quality of life of seniors with age-related macular degeneration.
