Humorous journal Švanda dudák - Svanda the Piper

Abstract:

Humoristický časopis Švanda dudák založil spisovatel, humorista a novinář Ignát Herrmann (1854-1935) v roce 1882. Až do roku 1886 vydával časopis vlastním nákladem. Od roku 1887 byl nakladatelem časopisu knihkupec František Topič a Ignát Herrmann působil na postu redaktora. Nejúspěšnější obdobím byla pro Švandu dudáka léta 1900 až 1914, kdy se jako týdeník a poté čtrnáctideník s kvalitním literárním obsahem a propracovanými ilustracemi dostal na přední pozici mezi českými zábavnými časopisy. Vydávání Švandy dudáka bylo po desetileté odmlce obnoveno ještě v roce 1924, ale obnovený časopis již čtenáře v takové míře nezaujal a jeho poslední čtyřicátý ročník vyšel v roce 1930. Ignát Herrmann redigoval časopis po celou dobu jeho existence. Význam Švandy dudáka pro oblast českého časopisectva je nesporný. Švanda dudák věnoval čtenářům plných čtyřicet ročníků humoru a zábavy a posílil sebevědomí českého čtenáře dlouholetou existencí českého ilustrovaného humoristického časopisu.

Abstract:

The magazine Svanda the Piper was founded in 1882 by Ignat Herrmann, a Czech writer, humorist and journalist. Hewas the chief editor and also the magasine´s publisher till 1886. In 1887 the bookseller Frantisek Topic became the publisher and I. Herrmann continued to work as the chief editor. The most successful period for the magazine were the years 1900-1914 when it became one of the most significant Czech humorous magazines, thanks to the high quality of its articles as well as illustrations. In 1914 Svanda the Piper was shut, its publishingwas renewed only in 1924. In the new context however the magazine did not regain the popularity in enjoyed during the pre-war period. The last issue was published in 1930. The importance of Svanda the Piper for Czech journalism is unquestionable. Svanda the Piper provided its readers with humor and entertainment for forty years, it helped to develop and support cultural self-confidence of Czeach readers.
