Long-term recovery and maintenance program for a patient suffering from metachromatic leukodystrophy: a clinical case.

Abstract:

Leukodystrophy is a degenerative genetic disease involving the central nervous system, in a white matter. The onset is at any age, from the prenatal period to adulthood. Some dystrophies are due to genetic mutations of myelin or oligodendrocytes, others from certain white substance components such as astrocytes, microglia, axons and blood vessels. In this thesis we will analyze the central nervous system in all its structures and functions, the mechanisms involved in leukodystrophy and we will examine a clinical case of metachromatic leukodystrophy to compare the treatment methods used with those indicated in today's guidelines.

Abstract:

Le leucodistrofie sono delle patologie genetiche di natura degenerativa le quali coinvolgono il sistema nervoso centrale, in particolare la sostanza bianca. L'insorgenza ? a qualsiasi et?, dal periodo prenatale all'et? adulta. Alcune distrofie sono dovute a mutazione genetiche della mielina o degli oligodendrociti, altre da alcune componenti della sostanza bianca come astrociti, microglia, assoni e vasi sanguigni. In questa tesi andremo ad analizzare il sistema nervoso centrale in tutte le sue strutture e funzioni, i meccanismi coinvolti nelle leucodistrofie e prenderemo in esame un caso clinico di leucodistrofia metacromatica per confrontare i metodi di trattamento utilizzati rispetto a quelli indicati nelle odierne linee guida.
