Perception of privacy in Instagram social network: users' perspective

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské diplomové práce je zjistit, jaké motivy vedou uživatele k užívání sociální sítě Instagram a zejména jak může tato síť ovlivnit postoj uživatelů k soukromí. Cílem teoretické části je shrnutí poznatků z obecné teorie o sociální síti Instagram, jakožto součásti života nejen mladé generace, a definování funkcí a možností využití Instagramu. O Instagramu budu hovořit jako o fenoménu komunikace obrazem, jež souvisí s vývojem fotografie. Oblast soukromí na Instagramu zmapuji v teoretické části nejprve z hlediska technologického. Popíši možnosti nastavení soukromí, které sociální síť umožňuje. Na druhé straně pak soukromí popíši z hlediska psychologického, jež bude odkazovat k myšlení a vnímání soukromí samotnými uživateli. Otázka, jak vnímají uživatelé Instagramu soukromí a jak se jejich pohled na tuto kategorii vlivem sociálních sítí změnil, je zároveň také podstatou výzkumné části diplomové práce. Charakter zvoleného tématu určil moji volbu metod. Pro zodpovězení otázek jsem použila metodologii kvalitativního výzkumu a jako metodu sběru dat jsem zvolila polostrukturované rozhovory, které jsou v textu analyzovány a kategorizovány, pomocí čehož jsou rozkrývány postoje jednotlivých respondentů ke zkoumanému tématu.

Abstract:

The aim of this master‘s thesis is to find out which motives lead the user to use social network Instagram and especially how this network can affect the attitude of users to privacy. The aim of the theoretical part is a summary of the knowledge from the general theory about the social network Instagram, as a part of the life of young generation, but not only of them, and the definition of functions and possibilities of using Instagram. I will talk about Instagram as a phenomenon of communication by image that is related to the development of photography. Firstly I will define the area of Instagram privacy from a technological point of view in the theoretical part. I will describe the privacy settings that this social network enables. On the other hand, I will describe privacy from a psychological point of view that will refer to the thinking and perception of privacy by the users themselves. The question, how the users perceive Instagram privacy and how their view of this cathegory has changed due to the social networking is also the essence of the research part of this thesis. Character of the chosen topic determined my choice of the methods. I used the qualitative research methodology to answer the questions and as a method of data collection, I chose semi-structured interviews which are analyzed and categorized, thus the attitudes of each respondent to the examined subject are revealed.
