Development of textile conservation and restoration in the second half of the 20th century in Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Diplomová práce dokumentuje vývoj konzervačních a restaurátorských technik u předmětů textilní povahy v 2. polovině 20. století. Shrnuje jednotlivé fáze vývoje oboru a hlavní myšlenky, které formovaly restaurátorské přístupy. Přibližuje významná pracoviště, jež se podílela na rozvoji oboru a uvádí jejich přínos a hlavní osobnosti, profesně spjaté s těmito institucemi. Hlavní část práce je složena z kapitol jejichž posloupnost vychází z běžné restaurátorské zprávy. Detailně popisuje procesy od čištění po adjustaci a uložení, které jsou zaznamenány ve studovaných restaurátorských zprávách, dobových odborných publikacích, článcích, příspěvcích ze seminářů a konferencí. Pro názornost je v každé kapitole popsán konkrétní předmět, u kterého byla výše popsaná technologie použita. Následuje zhodnocení výhod a nevýhod spojených s použitou technologií. Součástí práce je seznam používaných prostředků včetně jejich stručné charakteristiky. Cílem práce je definovat rizika, která se objevují u starších zásahů, uvést konkrétní příklady a nastínit vývoj technik, které jsou v souladu se současnými trendy.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis documents the development of conservation and restoration techniques for objects of a textile nature in the second half of the 20th century. It summarizes the various stages of development of the field and the main ideas that shaped the restoration approaches. It introduces the important workplaces that participated in the development of the field and lists their contribution and the main personalities professionally associated with these institutions. The main part of the work consists of chapters whose sequence is based on a common restoration report. It describes in detail the processes from cleaning to adjustment and storage, which are recorded in the studied restoration reports, periodicals, articles, contributions from seminars and conferences. For clarity, each chapter describes the specific subject for which the technology described above was used. The following is an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the technology used. Part of the work is a list of means used, including their brief characteristics. The aim of this work is to define the risks that occur in older interventions, give specific examples and outline the development of techniques that are in line with current trends.
